Does using windows 10 power saving mode harm the CPU?

Hello !!!

 

I just built a system with a Ryzen 5 3600 (3.6ghz stock), and the cpu is running a bit hot, around 42-50c idle, 72-85c when playing (I don't know if it's bc of the stock cooler, or bc i still didnt buy all the fans for the case). Anyways, because of that, when i'm just browsing the interwebs or doing homework I'm using the 'power saving' preset on win10, that makes the clock run at 2.5ghz and temps are around 40's. 

 

Does that harm the cpu somehow in the long run? Thanks !

If it harmed a CPU, it wouldn't still be an option after 4 major Windows releases.

It doesnt harm the cpu at all but it will be a large performance hit. Id suggest undervolting your cpu instead of just killing the clock speed.

Well considering the OP said they're just using it when doing basic dicking-around tasks that aren't gaming, I doubt killing clock speed is an issue.

85c at load is a bit high but its definetly not dangerous, you could also tune the fan curves in the bios if you really wanted to.

 

No, you dont need to use power saving mode.

It's a feature most processors have. Why run at full clock when you're just typing something in notepad? Saves power, money and perhaps prolongs its lifespan (?)

I got an old Dell C610 with a Pentium processor with Intel Speedstep™. So this kind of technology has been around for a while. Trust me, it isnt evil.
