How long does a custom build take?

I have commissioned someone local to do a custom build for me. Full custom liquid loop, custom cables, fan covers, painting etc. I gave him all the parts 1 week before Christmas and he still doesn't have an ETA for me. I am just impatient and so excited for it. Curious what average turn around time is for build builds like this. He is working full time as well.

TL:DR: They should've been done a long time ago, unless they have special circumstances. 

You should be able to do such a loop within a day or two of full working- minus the painting- (I'd say under 10-18 hours unless you're doing something *really* special- but with a few days of down time waiting for paint to dry or whatever. Even 10-18 hours is quite a long time to be working on one build) If he's been working on this for this long he either has had you in quite the waiting queue, he's waiting for some components, such as say, tools to bend petg if it's a hard loop, maybe they sent some components off to professional painters to get them done, maybe he just doesn't want to deal with it/you, or, he could just be a complete gook. I dunno, maybe you handed it off to a youtuber and they want to shoot a video building it, but they have projects they need to do before that.

 

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

Painting, depending on what it is, can be a very lengthy process. If he does not have a lot of free time, or a back log of work, this could result in a several month long process. That said all the other work is easily done on a weekend.

 

I would think that some kind of status update is in order by now though, seeing that it has been 6+ weeks already.

What kind of timeline did he give you when you started the project?

 

Does he have other customers in line ahead of you?

 

What's involved in "painting"? 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

No other PC customers but I know he does custom wood stuff as well. He was painting parts of the case and some of the covers on the motherboard. Everytime I ask him for a timeline he just gives me a whole list of other things he has been working on as well and says he has little time but is "rushing to get it done." He also received bad news his mom is sick and he is going to go take care of her but said he was rushing to finish it before he goes but still won't give me any kind of time frame. I told him if he needed to leave I could just take it as is but no reply. I hate to keep bugging him about it.

Sounds like a bunch of excuses, just tell him plainly that you expect it within the next week or you will take the parts back with not payment.

Can take along time. But if you’re giving them a build design and all free reign of the build it could be months. 
I assume something was covered, minimum specs and mods, timeline, cost upfront and many a contract.

I would just tell him that while he may have other things preventing him from finishing this build, you have patiently waited and you did not anticipate it taking this long. No proper ETA was provided, and you are no longer willing to wait. Tell him you would like your parts back either assembled or not by the end of the week.

as mentioned "Painting" is very very very vague.  

 

As for the rest of the work?  A weekend is more than enough.

I agree with everyone here. The amount of time he has taken doesn't align with the job. He has prioritized other more profitable work over you it sounds like and you will need to let him know you have run out of patience and either need all of your parts back or the finished product.
