Upgrade am3 socket... 955 to 1100t

I have an urge to upgrade from a quad core to a hex core. Is this worth it, the chipset is old but I see some 1100t for $200 so why not. What does everyone think.

I really don’t want to upgrade my mobo. I would like to max out my am3

AM3 is a dead platform, and its best is outperformed by the 2600K - a 2nd gen Intel chip.
You can upgrade to AM4 with a 1600AF and a decent B450 motherboard with the same budget - you'll just need to get some RAM.

Unless the board supports FX-6300 or FX-8300 forget it since Phenom II lacks modern instruction sets for many applications and games!

200$ for a 1100t? What? That is such horrible value. It's not worth nowhere near that money at all.

There is nothing worthwhile on the am3 socket. You can literally buy a used office dell from ebay with a first gen i7 and it would just flat out beat it in every way. Get a second gen i7 and they aren't even close to near each other anymore.

Just don't do it. What are you trying to do? Game better? It won't be better at all these things are just too old and even the best fx series cpu at launch was just a letdown and beaten by a midrange cpu from that time from intel without a sweat.

Even worse the phenoms are so old they lack many instructionsets making it impossible for them to run modern games or even use some software.

I’m trying to run 4K video smoothly, but I’ve heard you need a cpu to match your gpu

What is your whole spec? Could simply put be too old to handle 4k video. That and a phenom being so old lacking so many instruction sets it wouldn't be too suprising.

How can I run 4K video, people are saying buy a 1080 ti. Do you think that gpu with my 955 would be enough

You'll need a full system upgrade, honestly.

I see some 1100t for $200

there are much, much cheaper 6 core AM3 CPUs. A 1055T is much more affordable.

and make sure you use the quote button or we won't see your responses

to watch 4K video, you don't need a 1080 ti. you should just get a cheap GPU that's more modern. like a GTX 950 or something.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

What codec are you trying to play?

Normally you want hardware decoding of video, so a gt 1030 will work fine for 4k video playback

processor is amd phenom 2 955

16 gig ram 1866

1tb ssd

Got a gpu or something?

I mean for 4k you literally just need something that has gpu acceleration something as simple as a gt 1030 can do it.

I heard 4K is mostly gpu and not really cpu. The 1080 ti has 3 gigs

so plenty of space for 4K

Euhm I don't think you know what a 1080ti is because that is not his specs and that is not at all how it works. Like at all. Not even close.

what gpu do you have currently?

1080ti has 11gb of vram

you don't store video on the vram, so it won't matter how much you have, 512mB is more than enough for 4k playback

Sorry he 6450 right now

thats your problem, no hardware 4k decode, so the cpu has to to do it, a gt 1030 or 750 should hanlde this fine(depends on codec).

But really, id just get a faster whole system if your upgrading.

THat gpu can't really display 4k well either anyways

Also quote people so we see your replies. That is just old something simple like a gt1030 can do 4k decoding something the hd 6450 cannot do.

Really if I were you just buy a new computer instead of trying to upgrade a over a decade old machine much. Also the hd6450 can't even output 4k so why watch that stuff?

Well a gt 1030 would be about the cheapest new way. There are used options available too.
