Hey guys,

I have an asus maximus X motherboard and was wondering if it's possible to run multiple raid arrays at once with the onboard raid controller.

I currently have two 1tb Samsung SSDs in raid 0 (Volume 1) but would like to add two 2tb Seagate HDDs (Volume 2).

I really am not interested in software raid either.

You should be able to but I can't say that with 100% confidence as I don't own your board.

I'm going to make the bold claim that software RAID would be a great step above motherboard RAID.

If you're intent on hardware RAID get a proper RAID controller. Desktop motherboard RAID is not good at all.

Are those Enterprise HDDs, if not I see a lot of cursing in your near future. For hardware RAID you want to use Enterprise drives with TLDR, in short, Enterprise drives will not wait and check files if an error occurs within the RAID. Using regular drives it will kick one of them out because it tries to recover on it's own. The result is bad stability and total data loss in the worst case. If you want to know if that is possible, consult your manual. Usually the answer is no but there are exceptions.

yes, if you're running windows make sure your chipset drivers are up to date.

Sata mode is set to raid in bios.

Make sure Intel RST drivers are up to date.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not interested in software raid or windows storage pools. Also I am not concerned about potential data loss as I keep most of my important passwords and whatnot on google cloud.

The HDDs im looking to add are Seagate Barracuda drives.

Id like to have 2 arrays, one for SSDs and the other for HDDs.

Yeah you can do it. I've done it in the past on an X48 board just using the intel hardware (software)

AMD R9 9900X | Thermalright FW Pro Black, 3x TL-B12E | Asus Strix X670E -F | 64GB G.Skill 6000C26
Zotac 4070 Ti Trinity OC | WD SN850, SN850X, 2x SN770 | Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 | ProArt PA602
Adcom GFP-345, Adcom GFA-555, S.M.S.L D1+PS100, Cerwin-Vega! CLSC-15, Monster HDP-1800

Software raid is normally better in basically all ways, so why not. Motherboard  raid sucks, so id stay far away from it. Its using the cpu to calculate raid anyways, so your not saving cpu usage.

But those barracuda drives suck in raid, cause there smr, id just get a single larger hdd.
