How loud should a NAS Drive be?

Hey all, I have a 6TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro in my new QNAP, but sitting on my desk I can clearly hear the disk when it's in use. Is this normal? I was hoping it would be rather quiet sitting on my desk.

My 8TB WD Reds are pretty noisy. They aren't designed to be quiet. I keep my NAS pretty far from me.

oh makes sense its a enterprise drive so it doesn't matter that its screaming loud in a data center

So, I bought a 4TB WD Red about a month ago. I installed it, and... It's silent. Maybe it's due to using the sound isolating mounts in the HDD trey?

 

My old Seagate Barracuda drive is loud, though. It stopped clicking, but I still don't trust it. I'm going to replace it with three 2TB Crucial MX500 drives.

Do you have it in a trey? Can you use noise isolation pads/grommets?

 

Personally, I'm willing to put up with noise if it gets me reliability, but only to a point...

This is my experience as well, I have two 4 TB Reds in a NAS an arms length away and unless I make my room otherwise completely quiet and nearly press my ear to the NAS itself I can't hear the drives doing anything. And since 99% of the time I have a fan/AC and headphones on anyway...

I got 2 4tb Hitachis from '08 in my build, I can hear them from the next room over. (They are 7 platter drives though...) They sound like pouring a bag of gravel on a wood floor when they're transferring data. Your drives are fine from the video you posted, it's a quieter hiss kinda sound.
