Does slower charging make phone last longer? (Short Circuit comment)

Video Beagle

In the new Short Circuit on Samsung phones, Linus mentions that using slower charging increases the life of the battery.

Is that a known, tested, fact?  (Like it sounds reasonable, so much it could be a word-of-mouth "known thing", but does the science back that up)?

While It might be hard to find data on how the battery handles faster charging in terms of life span, more heat during fast charging isnt good for devices and usually lowers their life spans, thats why IT rooms are usually air conditioned as cool as they can

Linus did say before on a WAN show that the heat issue is the main reason he doesnt fast charge, and I agree your phone gets really hot, but in terms of actual data I am unsure

If I set an alarm and then plug in my Pixel 4A before I go to bed, it goes into "adaptive charging" mode which I believe basically charges as slowly as it can to still reach 100% by the time my alarm is set for. New feature they added in the December update.

Charging rate only affects battery lifespan at rates above 1 C (which is defined as 100% capacity in one hour). Since nearly every phone charges slower than this, charging rate is not a factor in practice.

What does affect battery lifespan is the end voltage. Each additional 0.10V above 4.00V decreases the number of cycles by approximately half. Most devices charge until 4.20V, while others push until 4.35V. 4.00V is approximately ~80% charge. Limiting the maximum charge voltage will have a much bigger impact on battery lifespan than anything else that you can do.

Yes and no. Depends how long you plan to keep your phone for, and what kind of fast charging you have. There's a lot of new charging tech coming out all the time, and we're really getting to the point where fast charging isn't that detrimental to the overall battery life. Linus's mentality, while not wrong, is something that he'll probably stick to for longer than needed because it's what he's known for so long that he'll simply overlook newer tech and the improvements that have been made.

Depends how it's handled as well. OnePlus, for example, offsets a lot of heat to the charger itself, and the phone stays relatively cool. There's also continuously improving tech, and battery degradation is no where near as bad as it was even a few years ago.

I mean, I'd hope it'd be charged by the time you wake up. Even a slow charger would have that charged in a few hours.

Well, I'm thinking more in an emergency situation, say you've only been asleep for an hour or two. Unlikely, of course.
