Using Intel Core I9-9900K CPU on HP Z370 Tampa 2 Motherboard

Dear sirs,

I would like to get your opinion on if I should risk doing this or wait and buy a new z390 motherboard.

My story.

My desktop rig is a HP Omen 880 series desktop case.

I currently own a RTX 2070 super from Gigabyte. I have a Corsair 850 watts power supply. My CPU cooler is very recently bought (September) Artic freezer Sport Duo Air Cooler. The motherboard is the original HP motherboard. My current CPU is a i5-8400.

Now during the black-friday sales period, I saw the i9-9900k dropping price to its lowest, so i couldn't resist it and bought it.

Until this moment I have bought everything on sales, minus my HDD 2tb from Toshiba, because originally I only had 250gb, i couldn't live that few storage.

I have been researching the risk of using this specific CPU on z370 chipset motherboard.

I see the main risk is the chipset pins overheating when overclocking.

https://www.extremetech.com/computing/283146-overclocker-argues-that-intels-core-i9-9900k-might-run-just-fine-on-older-motherboards

I would to get some real technical advice, without any commercial background behind it.

I just need to know if it's safe or not to do it.

I'm not rich, everything I bought was with my own money. I'm not a intel fanboy, don't really care, i just see what is the best for me.

Also i have noticed that this Omen case does not have open back side, or the the spacing to install a new motherboard, the full metal sheet, with holes only fitted to this motherboard.

I have a very old desktop case, airflow is not very good, but that one seems to be ATX form factor, and mine in miniATX or uATX.

z390 motherboards ATX form seem to be easier to get in europe than mini ATX.

So, I don't know what to do.

Look forward to get any reply. Thank you.

Best regards.

André Borges

HP Omen 880

Does the system *natively* (and this is important) support this new CPU?

HP has a nasty habit of whitelisting CPUs in their BIOS, and if your new CPU isn't there, it's not gonna work.

image.thumb.png.e72b3578b6caa35d8ea2e6be9487a880.pngi suspect not. the 9900k probably pulls too much power and is blacklisted in the BIOS. However, the worst thing you can do by trying is kill the board, In my experience with HP, it will just fail to boot and nothing will happen.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Thank you for reply.

As side note, I just saw Intel will develop and a new chipset for their up and coming CPU gen, i wonder if the people who bought a 10th gen CPU will need to buy a new motherboard to upgrade into that new generation. It's very difficult for somebody to keep up with this...

need to buy a new motherboard

Asus has already released BIOS updates so their 10th Gen Z490 boards will work with 11th Gen CPUs. When you buy pre-built computers from companies like HP, they are less likely to release BIOS updates to support newer CPUs.
