Upgrading PC - Let me know if i'm doing it wrong

Rayzioz

Budget (including currency): under $2000 AUD total including GPU which has been already bought for $1050

Country: Australia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Just games and browsing/content consumptions of all sorts. currently cannot sufficiently run CoD or any new tripple A title so aim is to fix that with buying as little as possible.

The PC i had a month or two ago:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RVJKkX -  didn't get all of this in one hit in 2015, but rather gradually kept accumulating more things to where it is today. i plan to do something similar again.

This is what i plan to do:

PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KMBCgt

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor  ($469.00) - ordered and back of the line at PLE.
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S 55 CFM CPU Cooler  (Purchased For $0.00) Bought the AM4 mounting kit from Noctua for $9.
Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M AORUS PRO-P Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($201.00) - already bought on amazon but can cancel still as shipment is 3 weeks away.
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory  ($135.00)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (Purchased For $0.00)
Storage: Samsung 860 Evo 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (Purchased For $0.00)
Storage: Samsung 860 Evo 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (Purchased For $0.00)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (Purchased For $0.00)
Video Card: Asus GeForce RTX 3070 8 GB DUAL OC Video Card  (Purchased For $1059.00)
Case: BitFenix Phenom M MicroATX Mini Tower Case  (Purchased For $0.00)
Power Supply: EVGA B2 750 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply  (Purchased For $0.00)
Case Fan: BitFenix Spectre Pro 156.27 CFM 230 mm Fan  (Purchased For $0.00)
Monitor: Asus VE248H 24.0" 1920x1080 Monitor  (Purchased For $0.00)
Monitor: Asus ROG SWIFT PG349Q 34.0" 3440x1440 120 Hz Monitor  (Purchased For $0.00)
Total: $1864.00

the 3070 is already in my system now but my cpu bottleneck is so hard that it renders it useless except for having a quieter, less thermally challanged gpu. everything with $0 is carryover from what i own already.

planning to get an NVMe SSD, maybe even the samsung 980 pro if the price can drop a little bit. not in a rush for one but would be nice.

may also fill up my available dimm slots by filling it out with the same ram sticks to get 32GB total. see how i go first.

i originally really wanted a 3080 for the right price, but couldn't get one and was important to have an updated GPU for the holiday season as that's when i can properly sit down and enjoy games with friends. some games was fine but the newer titles was not so pleasant to play. now that i'm not in a rush for a gpu i'm hoping to upgrade in 2 years time if ray tracing goes where i think it's going to go and the upcoming gpu's are more capable of running 1440p ray tracing at 100+hz, but would a 5600x be sufficient still then for ray traced 1440p ~100hz gaming? if not i'm hoping i can get a used 5800xt refresh or something of that nature to keep me going without needing another mobo ram change again.

would appreciate any comments if you see anything that is an issue with the parts listed above. my only concern at the moment is my SATA ports will be filled up from the jump so expandability in storage is more limited now but i could just replace the smaller drives and sell it or keep it as Christmas ornaments.

I think the 5600x will hold good for 1080p to 1440p high refresh rate rating, it is a pretty strong cpu, and i think the upgrade path you are taking is good, and you will be able to enjoy high fps gaming with the new cpu and gpu

the upgrade path

I heard AM4 is getting dropped and DDR5 is being released soon. Surely there will be no upgrade path with this news.

AMD promised support for AM4 Socket for 5 years from it's release date, so accordingly, even the upcoming Zen 4 architecture should be supported by AM4 mobos, albeit newer ones like the B550 or X570 chipset, and there is an interesting video about whether you should upgrade to DDR5 RAM, as speeds even as fast as 4400mhz are commercially available for DDR4 right now. The path you chose will stand the test of time even if the above mentioned announcements release soon.

I don't think Zen 4 will be on AM4 from what i've read as well, but i am hoping for a refresh for some sort of Zen 3+ that would hopefully be cheaply available in a couple years time  if necessary to run RTX 4080(?) sort of card once that's out.

appreciate your comments

It'll definitely depend considering that originally B450 was supposed to drop I think.

Yes, even if it does, you still have the option to go sideways (upgrading the cores) in the future.

This cannot happen in Intel current offerings, and to make things worst, the cap the core count to just 8 in the next 11th gen.

16 cores is soo much, the same PC might be usable 10+ years just by replacing the CPU.

So AM4 still have plenty to offer.

Yeah, B450 only supports the current 5000 Series AMD cpus, and B550 will support the promised Zen 4 CPUs

Yeah but what Im saying B450 was originally supposed to be dropped for 5000 Series. Plus I thought the promise "only lasted" until 2020 ended, although likely would be 2021 too.

Oh yeaa right, well AMD did surprise me with the 5000 series support for B450, given even the 3000 series required bios updates.

But now, I do think it's highly likely they will drop B450 support for Zen 4, and i did see a chart in the 5000 series release Video, saying the B550 and X570 chipsets will support the upcoming CPUs ( Zen 4 ) based an AM4

Make sense if zen 4 still using AM4, they probably make a different chipset for DDR5, like back when the transition from DDR2-DDR3, many systems can use both even on the same board. The next chipset should support DDR5 if they want to get 1 step ahead from intel.

True that, guess all we can do is wait for it to arrive

They probably gonna call it AM4+ with DDR5 support.
