Does SSDs have better life span?

Fatty

Hello, so, yea, odd title

but anyway, thing is, my WD hdd just showed this in DiskInfo

UhVlsNj.png

it (and the whole PC) is only ~1 year old, while idk what caused this, i highly suspect it is the constant power outage that happen in my country, sometimes the power will go out 3-4 times in a day.

happens in both summer AND winter, and due to me working from home, my PC is on almost 24 hours, so, 100% of the power outages happened when my PC was on.

Anyway, thats why i was thinking about swapping my 1TB HDD for either 500GB or another 1TB SSD instead of getting another HDD since it might face the same issue down the line.

now, the only thing I know about SSDs (other than speed) is that they don't have moving parts unlike a HDD, so, would that help with (surviving) the constant power outage? or should i just save the money and get another regular HDD? (maybe try different brand this time other than WD)

Depends on SSD and HDD.

Some HDD can survive better in some cases, while SSD can be a lot better in others.

both will degrade, SSDs often state how much write life you might expect (or if it means something else).

But since SSD are solid state, you can handle them a lot more easily than HDDs.

More so if the HDD is spinning and stuff happens to it, if it got multiple discs inside it, the quality of it (same with SSD about quality).

You can get a lot more TB with HDD for cheap, but there can be a reason for why they are so cheap.

So it very well depends on what you will store, also that SSD can be much much faster.

Hi @Fatty,

I would check the warranty on the drive to see if you can RMA it... money is money!

What you really need is a surge protector and a battery backup. This will protect all of your computer. If you've fried a drive, chances are you will fry something else that is more expensive to replace.

If you using the 1TB as a boot drive, then get an SSD. If it's only for data storage and you already have your OS on a separate SSD, then buy a mechanical drive and save a little coin.

Good luck!

Hard drives have moving parts so, by design, they don't last as long. However, if you're the type to do sustained writes on a drive day in, day out, it'll probably be no more reliable for you to get a cheap DRAMless SSD over a hard drive. The cheapest DRAM cache SSD is the Crucial MX500, and can be had pretty cheap for 1 TB being about $85.

I'd look into buying a UPS, and a surge protector if you don't already have one.

I wondered how you got your power on count so high.
