ssd or M.2 or nothing at all?

max668

Hello all!
For a wile now I have been meaning to upgrade from SSD to M.2 because I have been told that M.2 is faster.
I haven't done that because the prices of M.2 drives ware really high. It just so happens that SAMSUNG 970 EVO M.2 is on sell... ( link bellow )

https://www.newegg.com/samsung-970-evo-500gb/p/N82E16820147690

I was thinking about buying the 500 gb version

At the moment I am using SanDisk Ultra II 2.5 ( link bellow )
https://www.newegg.com/sandisk-ultra-ii-480gb/p/N82E16820173012?Item=N82E16820173012

Here are the questions;
Is it worth the upgrade?
Is it really an upgrade?

Thanks for your help.

Not worth the upgrade. You won't notice a difference in everyday system performance at all.

First off, M.2 and SSD are not terms that can be compared. M.2 is the form factor of your drive, as is 2.5" SATA. You can have an M.2 drive that performs the same as your 2.5" drive does. You're comparing a SATA drive to an NVMe drive. As for whether or not it's worth it? No, not really. I'm upgrading my SATA drive to an NVMe drive for the sole reason that my 8 year old SSD is dying. Otherwise I'd stick with my SATA drive.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Do you move large files around a lot? Then it might be worth it. Otherwise, probably not. You'll see minimal gains compared to what you already have, especially since you're looking at getting a smaller sized drive, which has less performance than a larger one.

I have 4 drives https://prnt.sc/wir8lv
Do I move large files? not really. At least not on C drive.
All my important files live on U drive
I use my ssd for OS and programs that require to be installed on C drive. Like the Adobe programs.
