Should i get 32gb of ram? Out of memory error

Ls9L

I've recently gotten 3 error codes on chrome (out of memory) and it crashes my whole windows and every application when it happens.. Most times i have about 30 tabs open, Steam, discord and a game. Always thought 16gb would be more than enough then I'll ever need so never really kept tabs on my ram usage. Is this just something to do with chrome or do i really need to consider Upgrading to 32gb or 64gb? And is 32gb possibly not enough either?

You can always run out of RAM (depending on what you're doing), no matter how much you have, but the question would be what exactly (e.g. which program) is using so much. Because 16 GB should definitely be enough for most normal use cases. Paying more money for something that e.g. could be fixed by replacing that program with something else is probably not worth it.

Did you disable swap by any chance? This could also lead to issues when Windows can't remove stuff from RAM that isn't actively used and has to keep everything in memory instead.

Good catch indeed normally the windows swap file would offload chromes stupid ram hogging.

You can always close Chrome tabs.  30 open?  You need all 30 at once?

Come on, it's not always about getting more shit.  Don't throw more money at it, just close a few tabs.

Something else, I forgot: Can you open task manager and have a look at the performance tab? Because sometimes people have an issue where some of their memory is shown as hardware reserved. So Windows wouldn't actually have the whole 16 GB available, which might also cause the issue.

You know it's funny, everyone says Chrome is a RAM hog.

My Chrome usage is currently sitting at: about 2 GB of RAM.

If I open up *100* tabs, my RAM usage going up to 4 GB...something isn't right in his system

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

That is strange chrome. When I do webdev with like 10 tabs open my chrome easily goes well past 6gb real quick. Laptop or desktop.

That's a good point. I use Edge, but was going with the accepted theory on these forums.  Chrome being a RAM hog.

I just duplicated this page 50 times on Edge, they've all loaded now, and my RAM went up less than 1GB.  So he must be streaming or downloading or some other activity on those 30 tabs, not just standard info.

Either way, it's all about how you're using things.  If you don't need 30 active pages open, close em.

Or buy more RAM I guess.  Options.

That would be why...

Chrome is a memory pig....My wife had 8 gb of RAM and Chrome would use every last bit when she had 5-6 tabs up, depending on the website. Do you really need 30 tabs open though? I go crazy when more than 4-5 are open. Can you bookmark them and come back later?

My chrome is adblock free as it's a dev browser for me. My firefox on the other hand just runs ublock.
