Brown disappointments

Hi I just got my first mechanical key board and it said it had brown switches but when I got the keyboard I was not able to feel any bumps when pressing the keys is this how it's supposed to be or did I just get a bad keyboard

If you press the key slowly, you will feel the bump. If you press it at a normal speed or fast, you likely won't.

That's just the way MX Browns feel.

 

There are much more tactile switches and of course there are clicky switches if you want a (much) more obvious bump.

The bump on brown is very subtle

Remove a keycap, you'll get to see the branding on the casing of the switch

You can take off a keycap and see if it's a Cherry switch or something else:

 

The logo (company name) can be a bit difficult to see, but it will be there.

 

Here is a Cherry MX Brown with black housing, which shows off the brand name a bit more clearer, so you know what to look for:

Cherry MX Browns are not all that tactile.

If you want an actually decent and/or tactile switch, you shouldn't be looking at Cherry MX at all. Cherry MX Blues do have a bit more of a tactile bump, but it's still crap compared to decent switches from other companies.

When I got my first used mechanical keyboard with mx brown I was really disappointed about the tactile bump in the switches ... I thought that it might have been cause it was 6 years old and it was really worn out.  My gf got a keyboard with kailh brown and they are day and night difference between the two ...

 

It is normal for mx cherry brown to feel almost linear ... and a bad scratchy linear mind you.

Browns are my favorite switch.

 

Do some research on different switch types before you spend money. The slightest amount would have told you Browns are the wrong choice if what you're after is a distinct tactile clicky actuation point.

 

Ideally buy a tester with various types of switches, of visit a store like Micro Center where you can touch various keyboards with different types of switches on display.
