question about windows 10 pro activation

So im going to be doing a complete fresh install of windows on my PC.  I want it to have windows 10 pro as it currently has 10 home.  I can get a windows 8.1 pro key from my school.  If i was to use that product key to activate windows 10 pro, would it work or does it have to be a windows 10 pro key.

Maybe if you install windows 8,1 first but that might not work since it's a school key

THe 8.1 key should work fine in win 10, give it a try when you reinstall.

The reason this (using 8.1 key on 10) works:
Windows is weird.

any windows 7 or windows 8 key will work in activating windows 10. altho it will activate whatever version the key is from so win 7 home key will only activate win 10 home. win 7 pro will activate win10 pro etc.
