Another day, another [tech] leak

Jet_ski

I think everyone needs to be more selective about what tech leaks they post here and stop the useless leaks. There was a time when tech leaks were cool because it meant something cool and new was about to hit the market. But nowadays you have every company leak their own launch to artificially create a buzz and get double exposure. This has become a very tiring pattern that has made tech news more like marketing spam.

Do we care if there’s a 3080 ti coming out next year? You still can’t buy the one that launched 2 months ago. Of course in a year’s time they will come out with better ones. So what’s the point in talking about something we all know will happen as if it’s news?!

Should we have cared in 2019 about rumors of new MacBooks with mini-LED to launch in possibly 2021 or early 2022?...

Its just ridiculous. Google and Samsung allegedly leak their own product launches days before launch.

So basically we should stop reporting on anything? Because we know every year companies are going to release new or updated products that improve upon current ones. New generation of Civic? Oh it's just going to be more fuel efficient than the last generation and come with more technology, whatever. New Tesla? Oh it's just going to be another electric car built by toddlers.

You’re taking that part of what I said out of context. The point is that until it’s near launch, unless it’s earth shattering or something amazing, there’s no point in talking about it 6 months - 2 years before launch.

The statement that there is no point is highly subjective and up to the individual.

I think it depends on what the leak is about and how credible the source is. For example for me it is interesting to hear what tech the next generation iPhone or Galaxy will have (or what the next iPhone will remove lol), or something like the cooler for the 3000 series cards. Basically the bigger picture things. The leaks I find a bit annoying are the ones that are about the specs and performance of future products. When a manufacturer provides performance number, they are credible but only trustworthy when third party sources verify them. When a random person provides performance numbers for a product that hasn't been released yet, there is no credibility and other sources can't confirm them. Even if the numbers are somehow accurate, which they often are not, you still can't trust them until the product is released and other people can test them. I do agree with you that most leaks nowadays are annoying, but there is still a space for some of them.

that must have been a really narrow time frame because I completely missed it...

this is like 99% of all "tech leaks", notice how it's always just a few days before launch or shortly before a planned reveal......?

And, ironically, they do it because people think it's "cool" and it *actually* does work...
