AM4-compatible semi-passive tower air cooler?

kingmustard

Any recommended ones?

I am aiming for a near-silence when the PC is mostly idle (such as general Web browsing).

just get whatever big tower fan cooler you fancy, and adjust fan curves to have absolute minimum fan speed below 60°c.

I don't want a software method. Sometimes, reinstalling the fan software etc. would reset the curve. I don't want to keep checking the software every month to make sure the curve is still applied.

I'm not sure my motherboard has the option in its UEFI?

page 77 of your motherboard manual, available in the support section, or your motherboard box ;)

it's under the "H/W monitoring" section of your UEFI.

I can' t see anything about setting a curve. Just presets like 'Silent Mode' etc.

asrock tends to be very basic about that stuff, just get the most silent mode and/or the hottest target temperature (that is not above 75°c, in case it'll let you go to 90 or something xD)

So I need a hardware solution.

The ARCTIC Freezer i32 features: "SEMI PASSIVE COOLING: A F12 PWM fan that starts up at a higher load (40% PWM) because of its installed fan controller. The CPU can be cooled completely passively during typical Windows operation."

Shame it's for Intel CPUs only.

There's a silent preset but you can set a custom curve.

There's an a Freezer A32 counterpart. That being said, there are newer alternatives available.

What cpu, case, and ram are you using? Budget?

No budget. I just want a good air cooler to ensure I maintain full clocks/boost as often as possible.

If you're aiming for low noise, the Ninja 5 is hard to go wrong with: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/dZ3H99/scythe-ninja-5-430-cfm-cpu-cooler-scnj-5000

That's far too big for my case, I believe.

The Ninja 5 is 155mm tall. There are plenty of examples of the Lancool 205 with taller coolers in it on pcpartpicker.

FYI, the 205M is an matx case but it does have a similar amount of cooler height clearance.

It's not just height, though. The fast PCIe slot on my motherboard is at the top, so that cooler would not fit.

That's also fine. https://www.hwcooling.net/en/test-scythe-ninja-5-evolution-of-the-revolutionary-predecessor/

I wonder if it'll clear my RAM?

The fan in the default position has a bit over 40mm of clearance which is enough for the ram you mentioned. Since the cooler is 155mm tall, the fan can also be raised a few extra mm if needed. From the same review:

It's a shame it doesn't have a zero-RPM mode.

I am aiming for an almost silent system during Windows use.

Already have a zero-RPM PSU and GPU.

Zero-rpm may just be dependent on the motherboard and how low fan settings can go.

Even then, the Ninja 5's fans go down to 300rpm which is extremely quiet.
