My PC setup compatible with Nvidia 3080

Hello this is my first time on these forums and wanted to better insight because I am not sure what to upgrade in order for my system to run better than it is now.

My PC system includes:

Processor: i5 8400

Ram: Corsair 16gb DDR4 2666

Mobo: Gigabyte B360 HD3

GPU: Nvidia 3080

PSU: 650 Corsair CSM

Cooler: Noctua fan on right side

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case

Storage: 2 WD Caviar Blue 1TB and 1 250gb Samsung 860 Evo and 1 500gb Samsung 860 Evo

Monitors: (1) 27inch acer 1440p VA 144hz, (1) 27inch samsung 1080p 60hz, (1) 21inch Lenovo 1080p 60hz and (1) 24 inch Asus 1080p 60hz

I was recently trying to play COD:Cold War and I have all the setting all maxed out to see how much FPS I would get and its showing 40-30 FPS. Not entirely sure what is going on and the game updated recently today and I thought it would fix the FPS, but it did not. So, maybe an update to the drivers, but again not sure and was wondering if I need to upgrade any of my parts to help this. I know that My CPU is getting bottlenecked, but I do not think it would get FPS around 40-30 though, so I was thinking the PSU as well.

Thank you for reviewing my situation and any help is appreciated!

That CPU is pretty weak compared to your GPU. What would your budget be for an upgrade? Because you would need to upgrade your motherboard anyways to support a newer CPU, I would consider switching to Ryzen. The 5600x on a decent B550 board would pretty much eliminate any bottlenecks. I'm honestly pretty surprised the 3080 even runs on a 650 CSM, because of its transient power spikes, but nonetheless I'd recommend you upgrade to a 750W or 850W power supply, to help support a new Ryzen CPU.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

Yeah, a 650W may struggle to harness the beast that is a 3080. You might also be running into some thermal issues based on what would appear to be your single case fan? Those might be some issues you could be having. Also, what games are you playing that are spitting out 30-40 fps?

Will it work? Yes. Will it give you the experience 3080 is hyped up to be? No, maybe 80%... or 70% of it.

Oh I forgot to mention I am using 2 Noctua NF-A14s in the front to intake. and I am using a Noctua NH-U12S for my CPU cooler. Also I have one fan above the cooler to exhaust. and of course the rear to exhaust.

I think they might have a noctua cooler with the fan on the right.

The meshify c as 2 fans stock.

I believe OP actually owns a 3080 already, they're just wondering about upgrading the rest of their system.

If you can afford it then why not? Will it be the best FPS per $ spent? No it won't but you will probably get the most FPS you can with the CPU, just those last few will be very expensive.

I have the 8600 and the most powerful card I would personally pair with it is a 5700. It can handle a 5700XT but the 4-10 extra frames would be a bit expensive for my tastes...

I was trying to play Shadow of the Tomb Raider and COD: Cold War.

Got 40-30 FPS for COD: Cold War and 80-100 FPS on Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Yea I figured just thought the frames would be fine and hold out my i5 8400 and for the PSU I saw some others rigs and they said 650W is fine with theres bc Nvidia just recommends 750W for worse case scenarios. And I am looking into Ryzen and was considering the 5600X however I was trying to not have to get a new mobo. My Micro-center has a deal on an i9 9900K that’s $299 which is the same price as the Ryzen 5600X, so I was trying to debate about that since the i9 9900K is compatible with my mobo. And the performance is on par but I know Ryzen is looking good right now with their 4th gen CPUs and beats intel now. The 5600X is on par with an i9 is impressive so that’s why I was thinking either or. And I wasn’t sure about PSUs effecting performance on the GPUs. If my 650W was affecting the GPU wouldn’t it have trouble booting up and doing simple tasks like browsing?

Just wanting to know your thoughts bc I’m not 100% sure and really appreciate your insight on what my system needs to better perform with the 3080.

Yeah, NVIDIA recommends a 750w for the 3080, while 650w is theoretically enough for the 3080 and the i5-8400, I would follow their recommendations as a minimum spec for the 3080. When Linus and Anthony were testing it, they were seeing huge random power spikes which might be a good reason for meh FPS. Right now, the PSU you have is like trying to drive a big utility truck with the engine from a Honda Pilot, it'll work, but not especially well and its gonna be a ride on the struggle bus.

Oh I see okay makes sense I was considering jumping to an 850W. Any considerations on PSUs? I was looking at EVGA ? 80 Plus Gold? I think it’s on sale on Newegg for $149.00 I forgot the name and all but that should be close.

the answer to that question:

I would choose something from the A-tier for your shiny new 3080. I'd also check out the LTT video for consultation, I remember that certain power supplies had trouble with the power draw tripping the overcurrent protection.

If you're upgrading the CPU to anything more than what you have currently, I'd get an upgraded PSU.

The 9900K is compatible with B360 motherboards (with a BIOS update), but as a pairing it makes no sense. You can't overclock on a B360 board, so you're just wasting money on a K-series chip. You also lose other features like RAM over 2666MHz, which makes a noticeable difference on newer CPUs.

Because you're going to have to upgrade your motherboard to support a newer CPU which will allow you to take advantage of all of your 3080's performance, I'd honestly just go all the way. Zen 3 is a super compelling option for gamers, with a bunch of creature comforts like backwards compatibility of motherboards.

The PSU wouldn't affect the performance of your GPU. If it runs, it runs. But if you're getting a new CPU with a higher power draw, I'd recommend you upgrade to a 750W.

I'm assuming you're just using the Intel stock cooler, so yes I would upgrade. You could use the stock cooler that comes with the 5600x if you wanted to save some money, or you could get something a bit beefier like an NH-U12.

Hey quick question which CPU should I consider for longevity wise? Intel or AMD ? And should I wait for the 11th gen for intel?
