What's to stop YT from partnering anyone ever again?

Email I recieved yesterday evening from YT:

You're receiving this email because we're updating the YouTube Terms of Service ("Terms") to clarify our terms and provide transparency to our users. These changes shouldn't significantly alter your access or use of the YouTube service.
 
A summary of the changes:
  • Facial recognition restrictions: The Terms of Service already state that you cannot collect any information that might identify a person without their permission. While this has always included facial recognition information, the new Terms make that explicitly clear.
  • YouTube's right to monetize: YouTube has the right to monetize all content on the platform and ads may appear on videos from channels not in the YouTube Partner Program.
  • Royalty payments and tax withholding: For creators entitled to revenue payments, such payments will be treated as royalties from a U.S. tax perspective and Google will withhold taxes where required by law.
 
Please make sure you read the updated Terms carefully. The new Terms will take effect on 18 November, 2020 for users in the U.S., and similar changes to our Terms of Service will be made outside the U.S. in 2021. By continuing to use YouTube after this date, you are agreeing to the new Terms. If you would like more information, visit our Help Center.
 
Please note, if you allow your child to use YouTube Kids, then you are agreeing to the new Terms on behalf of your child as well.

So it appears that end goal is turn this into a platform to attract and keep the big brands like network television that also hosts user created content for free.  Pretty sure the middle bullet point means that the word "may" is a typo and should have been spelled as "will".

 

Funny thought, I recall Jim Sterling doing the content deadlock and it was hilarious, I wonder if he or others will start doing that again.

Correct YouTube has never really been profitable for Google. It's also extremely shitty how corporatized it is now. The adpocalypse was entirely fabricated for PR and led to creators not being able to monetize their videos but Yotube running ads on their video and making money instead. Creators almost entirely rely on outside sources of income like merch now

Youtube is a business, not a charity.

 

People are uploading hundreds of hours of videos PER SECOND to Youtube, of which the majority are useless crap that don't even have any view and that resulted in massive continuous upgrade from many server across the world.

 

And with the rising popularity of adblockers, many viewers are freeloaders, who don't even bring their favorite Youtubers any revenue in adsene. Linus himself said on one of the WAN show that Youtube premium users generate a lot more money per view because of adblock.

 

You are using Youtube FOR FREE. There's an argument to be made about how they're using your data, but do you think your data is really worth that much?

 

Do I agree with their method? - Lol, nope

 

Do I have a solution? - I'm not that smart.

 

But they are a business, and a business needs to constantly generate revenue and because of adblockers, and countless number of useless channels which leeching on their server storage, they have to cram ads into some few popular Youtubers.

Like it or not, youtube is the gateway to finding good video content.

They have to pay for it somehow and ads and premium accounts are how. 

All "free" services are run by essentially drug pushers. They get you hooked into free media. Once they get enough people hooked, you start implementing measures here and there to squeeze now money out of the pockets of the customers and content creators. Where are the creators going to go that has as large and audience!  Where are consumers going to go that has as large a selection of content?

Considering the amount of content uploaded to the platform daily (and in ever increasing file sizes for 4K and 1440P content which is becoming more common), it's hard to imagine the costs from the outside. YouTube also shoots itself in the foot when it demonetizes some creators for the most lame thing, while allowing worse content to run ads.

Sigh... Youtube is practically pushing me to install some Adblock. 

 

Just today I started to watch a video that was about a programming subject, not some music clip or some meme or some tv show bit.  In the first 5 minutes, i got 3 ad interruptions... at start, at 2 minutes and at 4:30  ... and the middle break had two 5 second no skippable ads.

 

Also, it pisses me off, they could easily track how many ads are shoving "down my throat", I'm logged in so they could keep track.  No, instead if I'm about to watch 5-6  5-8 minute videos in a row, I end up getting videos at start and end of each video, so it ends up worse than regular TV ... ending with 5-10m of ads for 30-40 minutes of content.

 

Don't get me started on ads that aren't ads ... I get full music clips from random Indian and Arab artists playing as ads.

 

I'd make it super simple

 

basic accounts  :

limit to 480p and 720p  (480p for watching on phones and old tvs and old computers, or where they don't have bandwidth/slow connections)

For 1080p and 1440p ,  user pays 10$ a year and gets YoutubeHD or Youtube+ account and also gets ability to upload content and gets LESS ads.

For 4K and higher, user pays another 5$ a year.

 

Youtube premium is around 6.2$ here ... make it 7$ and you're basically spreading those 10$ for youtube+/youtubehd over the course of a year.

 

keep track of how much they watch,  play up to 5 minutes of ads within 30 minutes of viewing. If user skips too much, have no skippable once in a while ex once an hour or once every 5 short clips or so. 

for videos shorter than 5 minutes, only allow up to 30s of ads at beginning and end

for videos shorter than 10 minutes, allow up to 1m of video at beginning and end

for videos longer than that, have at least 10 minutes at uninterrupted viewing, maybe up to 2 minutes of ads at breaks.
