What happens if I run out of RAM (Mac)?

What happens if I run out of RAM on my Mac?

I really need to upgrade my Final Cut Pro X editing workstation, and therefore I'm looking to buy the new Mac mini with the M1 chip. However, I need this new computer quickly, and the 16 GB RAM model won't be ship to Sweden until early January. But they have the 8 GB RAM model in stock at the nearby Apple Store. Therefore, I'm thinking of buying that model and work on that until January. I checked Activity Control and I found that I'm usually using 7-10 GB of RAM when using FCPX. Since I sometimes use more RAM than 8 GB, what will happen if I edit on this 8 GB computer and run out of RAM?

Hey, nothing really will happen if you run out of RAM except it will be slower and maybe not as responsive. I would NOT recommend getting the 8GB model. 8GB RAM is just not enough for video editing these days. Especially if you work with higher resolution footage. 8GB Ram will work. But its not recommended + its stupid because then you can only cache a small portion óf the videofile that you are editing. If you get the new 8GB model and use it until january it will be a money waste. even if you sell it again.

I would recommend you either wait until the 16GB model is avaible for you OR upgrade your current rig. (if that is possible).

Either way have fun wasting money on apple products.

Swap file will be used thus slowing things down a lot. Don't get the 8gb model it's not enough be patient and don't waste money. You have a computer now why the rush? If it's gonna be worse than the old system when out of ram why get the new one?

What system do you currently have?

Personally I would wait for the 16GB model. Also would you be able to order it from elsewhere in europe to your country? For example you can get the model you want in the UK

Dirty Windows Peasants :P ?
