Pasta Bag Opened - Unsafe to Eat?

So I was at the grocery store recently.   I'm also in another country so I don't speak the language.  After I bought my groceries from walmart here, I noticed when I was bagging my groceries in the bag... one of the expensive pasta I bought... you see pieces of it coming out.  I saw a piece came out when the cashier was ringing up my groceries... then saw another piece come out.   I did not say anything because I can't speak the language and it was going to be a hassle.

 

 

So as I got home, I took a look and the pasta bag is opened... but not like in the top/bottom part but in the back of it... the middle part... where its like busted open but in a neat manner in a line.  When I take a look at the back middle of it, you see like its opened in the back middle.  Now many times before this, I had situations where I come back from grocery store... only to find out certain foods I bought such as pasta or rice was opened or popped opened... and I believe almost every single time I just threw it in the garbage.  Also because of that, whenever I buy pasta/rice and many foods, I carefully look at the packaging to see if anything is broken such as many times you see a pasta bag broken open etc.  This time however, I wasn't that careful but I did recall I took a look to see if the top part is opened or not in the bag.

 

 

Now... what im not sure is... was that package already opened in the middle back or not.  Such as it might already been when I picked it out of the shelf... or maybe the cashier was ringing the items up and threw it hard enough to pop it so to speak... that would not surprise me.  Of course there is a chance I could have popped it when putting it in my grocery cart and it was already popped in the back middle of the bag.  But I'm strongly leaning towards it probably was already opened before I got it.

 

 

Now whichever way the pasta bag got opened... I should throw it away right?  I was pretty disgusted when the cashier was ringing up the items and then I saw a piece of pasta come out... I know this because that pasta is a specific color... and not like your normal pasta.  I thought why did I not check every part of the bag because this time, I was not that careful.  Usually I check every part of it.  But its very possible it wasn't opened in the back until I got to the cashier.  

 

 

So its like okay well that would mean the pasta in the back middle part where its opened... definitely touched the counter when the items were ringing up.  

 

 

As you saw in a previous thread of mine, I'm a huge germophobe.  But this is for sure a toss out right?  Thus had it been already opened when I got it off the shelf, you risk food poisoning etc?

You should have taken the bag from the cashier and wagged your finger, and hopefully you can say no no.

 

Otherwise return it immediately.

 

Throw it out if you cant deal with communicating with return agent, though sometimes you might be able to find them who speak your language.

You're actually probably better off eating the noodles that touched the counter. Hyper cleanliness leads to many problems, especially in children

Just keeping this here as a You can't get food poisoning from opened pasta. And besides that if there was any germs they would be gone when you boil it. I'd be more concerned with all the insects that are ground up with the whrat to make the flour used to make pasta. And there is more than you think!

Nothing at Walmart is really truly gourmet or expensive, not like going to real Italian store and buy "expensive" pasta there that would be expensive.

I'd be more concerned with product tampering, who really knows with an opened package.

Chances are you will kill off anything it came into contact with when you cook it.

The only thing I would worry about is if it was opened by another customer before you purchased it. I would check for odd coloring and make sure nothing is in there that isn't supposed to be.

If your confident it was opened through means of mishandling, which is likely, I would just go ahead and cook it.

Hey.  Well the thing is sometimes when i go to this walmart, I seen pasta bags that are open and on the shelf.  Probably a customer dropped it and then put it back there etc.  But it doesn't happen that much.

 

 

Yea I heard about product tampering.... but I don't believe that this happened with it.  The pasta looks normal when you look at the color of it.  Again its the back of it... the middle part that is opened.... like imagine instead of opening the bag at the top or the bottom, you do it at the middle back of it.

 

 

But you all agree throw it out right?  Yea I know when you boil it and cook it, it will kill things off.   But this is still risky right?  Again, normally i check a bag carefully but this time... I either missed it... or it got broken when the cashier was handling the pasta and ringing it up.   I checked online and it seems to say discard any food that is opened or torn apart etc.   Im not for sure it was opened through the cashier ringing it up... because I don't think I carefully looked at that middle back part of the pasta when putting it in my cart.  Another thing i want to add is this.  Back then at walmart, I use to see rice where you see tiny ants inside etc.  So back then i would take a look at the rice to make sure no ants were inside.  Now this doesn't seem to be an issue.

Who knows if an unknown chemical or unknown powder stains dried pasta or discolors it.

 

You should have spoken up the minute you saw the parcel dropping out of the box but you did not so you have to either throw it out or eat it. Its Walmart, nothing at Walmart is expensive or gourmet.

I disagree with you,

there is not such thing as "real" italian food, and most of expensive stuff it's not really "gourmet" (though it depends also on the definition of gourmet)



 

but it's expensive because of the name or rarely stock, for example here in italy cherry cola is ultraexpensive, because it's an item that ufficially isn't sold in the italian market, pretty much it's the same with whatever other market, I don't understand why it shouldn't be the same with food.. oh I forgot that Italians are chauvinists about "their" food

 

italy has such ridiculous buisness model, importing stuff, make the work in italy, and the final product magically becomes italian, so you can sell it for like x10 times more (I'm pissed with italian food, and italy)

 

anyway in theory he would boil that thing, so it would be ok.. but who knows wth that pasta touched with, so.. I wouldn't eat it

Did you eat this pasta or throw it out?

 

I'm on the same boat. Abroad right now. Pack was damaged but it was sellotaped by staff. It would never happen in uk. 

 

I asked staff using messenger app. They said damaged during transit. I asked for refund. After a bit of to and fro they agreed. 

 

But going there for refund is hassle. There isn't mould or anything unusual on the dry spaghetti strands. Just some tiny black specks. Maybe dust. Probably wash off when draining. 

 

I have ibs. So a bit cautious about food safety. Wondering how you faired.
