Budget (including currency): No more than $400 really but $300 seems to be enough

Country: US of A 

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Fortnite, Warzone, Rocket League, ect

Other details : I want to build a PC for my cousin's 11 year old son. He has recently been talking to me about wanting a gaming pc and looking at some of the NZXT build options but I know his mom is pretty tight on money. I have a plethora of spare parts just lying around from all my builds throughout the years so I thought I should just build him a PC with those. But I'm at a crossroads of what I should put together because I have 2 different intel motherboards (LGA 1150 and LGA 1151) and processors to choose from and those are also different form factors. I just wanna know which of these two builds I should actually build and are better for "future proofing".

the 6600k one will be easier to upgrade since it uses DDR4, family members could also appreciate a small system more.

In gaming, your most likely not going to notice a difference between the two. If your cousins son ever wants to upgrade, the i5 system is probably better as he can put a 6700K in there

Edit: Just remembered that the 6600K doesn't have hyperthreading. For games currently, use the 4790k. If he wants to upgrade later on, the 6600K would also work.

Personally I'd go for the 6600k system to give. But both are dead in the water in terms of basic 'future proofing' that said there is the potential for an easier upgrade on that Z170 motherboard (used 6700k or 7770k). And of course the GPU could be easily upgraded.

 

You'd have to check with those RGB fans, if they need an RGB header that motherboard likely does not have one (just guessing TBH). Regardless I recommend these as they are still PWM, better value (3-pack), and can be controlled via a RGB header or the included cable controller.

It's my understanding that hyperthreading doesn't effect gaming?

The case for the Z170 comes with a fan hub which I think supports RGB. So that would work, right?

Ah yes the H210 'i' it should work then. Worth double checking though, I a not familiar with the NZXT hub controllers. 

 

EDIT: if you give away the 4790k system you will have the same issue with the fans, and the ones I linked would be the better choice. I've sued them they are solid.

It did not use to, but currently it can make a big difference, especially on low core count CPUs like these (by today's standards).

 

I'd put my money on the i7 4790K system being faster in games. The i5 6600K has basically the same performance as an i5 4690K, and I know for a fact that the i7 4790K beats the hell out of a i5 4690K in modern titles.

Games like RDR2 get a huge performance bump from having extra threads and cores. For AAA titles you are going to want those extra threads.
