Minecraft?

Hey guys I'm not a gamer what is all the rage with minecraft I mean it looks like its around the same time period as pong, is this like a cult following thing I see a lot of guys building servers around this

It's a fun game.

Sure, it may look simple and some would even consider it 'bad looking', but the graphics - to me - have a certain charm to them.

 

The way certain blocks from a distance can look non-descript when not put in context (i.e. a dirt block can look like a generic 'brown block' from far enough away) allows people to build so many different structures, using these many blocks.

People who enjoy the Sim City/Zoo Tycoon/AoE style of managing a settlement may like the game from another perspective too, the perspective of making yourself as efficient as possible, with different types of (automatic) farms.

 

That opens the opportunity for redstone too, Minecraft's "energy"/"circuit" equivalent.

 

The options on what to do in Minecraft seem endless, which is partially helped by its simple graphics, meaning with enough imagination you can do whatever you want

I was about to say this.

 

Redstone keeps thousand of players playing, because of how much it resembles actual computer circutry.

 

Also, its just a relaxing game. it has milions of possibilitys, and has one of the largest modding comunitys on the planet, maybe rivaling even skyrim.

So is the server side just a passion thing or bragging rights? I mean this is not a money thing right?

Of course with 200 million copies of the game sold, there are also thousands of reasons as to why to play the game.

Obviously, some people are in it for the money, as with every hobby, but I feel like a majority of people play it for the fun and endless possibilities.

What I mean is there a money thing to running a server? Not the creators or anything

As with anything in the world, people can make money off a server.

You just have to have enough players and give them a reason to contribute to a server (i.e. free resources, a plot of land in a good location, etc.).

 

I feel like most Minecraft servers are passion projects or just between friends.

Usually, if its a free to access server like some, its losing money or breaking even.  THe only thing that a lot of servers do is donations, which gives you better items is pvp (like better kits etc) and cosmetics.

 

Something just came out that even lets MC Bedrock (console, pocket, and windows 10) play on minecraft java servers, and thatt adds a whole new workd of possibility to servers too.

Appreciate the insight guys the reason I ask is I built a homelab that is crazy under utilized and no I'm not looking for a money grab just curious as to why I keep seeing minecraft in the server forum guess this weekend I'm going to game this minecraft and see what all the rage is after all yes I am from the pong era circa 1970's so blocky screen graphics are remembered fondly and yes my first computer was a radio shack tandy MX80 ha beat that!
