The most silent PSU for Asus Strix OC RTX 3080

marako

Hey, I'm looking to replace my current Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 650W (bought it mid 2018) with something more powerful and more silent.

My PC spec:
Ryzen 3700X+NH-D15 (will be replaced with Ryzen 5800X/5900X)
Asus Strix OC RTX 3080
Bunch of NVMe and SSD drives
Runs 24/7 (most of the time under very low load)
Phanteks P600s case (with SW3 fans)

I'm looking for something as quiet as possible since Seasonic is very loud under load (gaming). Here are some of the in-stock PSUs that caught my interest (all of them, except RMi, have similar price. RMi is the cheapest one):
Corsair RM850i gold
Corsair HX1000 platinum
Corsair HX1000i platinum

Seasonic Focus GX-850 gold

Seasonic Focus GX-1000 gold

Seasonic Prime PX-850 platinum

Seasonic Prime TX-750 titanium

My questions are:
1. 850W or 1000W for this build?

2. Which one of them will be most silent/has the best fan?
3. Is RMi a lot worse than HX/HXi, besides efficiency (no 850W HX/HXi available atm)?

4. I'm leaning towards RM850i, is it a correct choice considering PC runs 24/7 (most of the time under very low load)?

Thanks in advance for help/suggestions!

850w should be more than enough. You may not even have to upgrade- a 10900k 300 system only pulls ~500w from the wall at max load. The RMI should be fine

1000w is overkill id prefer the px-850 or the rmx850i

Thanks for the tips. I've just found out that Seasonic PRIME GX-850 (gold) is also available, in almost the same price as Corsair RM750i.

1. I've looked at the tier list and read some reviews, I know both of them are top tier, but which one should perform more silent under load? I've no interest in Corsair Link, performance is the only thing that matters in this case.

2. HX850 / HX850i should be available in 2-3 weeks. Is it worth waiting for them, considering that RMi is in stock?

1.- There is no info on 5900X's power consumption yet, but AMD said this CPUs won't increase their power draw compared to the current 3000 series. According to TPU the 3900XT + whole system (except GPU) draws 180W under a very heavy load

if we factor the gpu, the RTX 3080 strix when overclocked, will pull 400W at most IMU so at worst I guess 600W for the whole computer. So 850W is plenty, I wouldn't consider 1000W units unless they cost almost the same as the 850W variants

BTW, forget about the 5800X, it's a poor value, if you want a serious upgrade you should aim at the 5900X

2.- Fan is pretty good on any of the corsair units you mention, as for the seasonic ones i'm not sure, i know the old prime units used a hong-hua fan, which is far from the best in therms of reliability, idk if the new GX/PX/TX use a different fan

as for noise, I encourage to check the tier list, the most silent units are shown in blue letters, of check reviews, AFAIK, both the corsais units and the seasonic prime, at least the titanium ones are very quiet, even at high loads.

3.- I think those three corsair units share the same platform, and even if they don't, you can't go wrong with any of the 3, the HX drops corsair link support, the HXi does have corsair link but those are old units. in case you want top quality you need to go AX1600i or something of that nature

4.- All of them are top-of-the-line PSUs. But I'd forget the GX-1000, always prefer quality over quantity. 850W is more than enough, and high-wattage PSUs tend to be terribly inefficient at low loads

1.- I'd prefer RM750i over GX-850, bc the GX-850 drops multi-rail and even if you max out your system (and based on what you mention that is unlikely to happen) 750W should suffice

2.- Since you won't use corsair link, HX850 is the better choice, it's slightly more efficient and just as good as the RMi (if not better)

another good option is the straight power 11 platinum

Thanks for the suggestions (both about CPU and PSU). I made a typo, RM850i not RM750i, so the headroom should be even bigger.

As for the gold/blue PSUs in the tier list, unfortunately, most of the them aren't available atm or are way, way overpriced.

I guess I'll go with the RM850i - 2-3 weeks of waiting for the HX seems a bit long and BQ's 5y warranty is unacceptable for me at this price point.

welcome

yes, the RM850i should be just fine, in tomshw they reviewed the RM750i and the noise is 35dB @ full load

i expect the RM850i to be just as quiet, if not quieter,

5 year warranty is more than enough, that doesn't make it worse quality

but anyway, it's your choice

Try 650W to 700W, not 500.... And that's a gaming load...

The Strix 3080 draws more than 450W by itself.

MY system below pulls ~630W+ not including power spikes from the PSU, not from the wall, gaming load, actual real power draw.

My 3080 FTW3 Ultra also pulls 450W+ like the Strix.

An 850W PSU would be the min for that GPU.

For reference, there is a report of the the Strix 3080 OC tripping ASUS's low power/ low voltage LEDs on a Rm850x. *EDIT*And the Rm850x and Rm850i are basically the same.

And there are more than 6x RMX 850's that are working fine that I know of over on the EVGA forum..

With the 3080 FTW3 Ultra (450W card) and 3090's.

For now, but it suggests that their PSU's may be close to the limit. Maybe if they decide to overclock cpu, ram and GPU they will begin to see issues. As components  slowly degrade, they may also see issues Just saying that if I was OP, I would go for the HX or AX850 and not the rm850i. On the ASUS DIY PC page the Asus rep Juan Jose Guerrero suggests 850 - 1000 watt if overclocking. Also given that the EVGA cards don't have the same power delivery, bios or the power monitoring LED's which Asus has, you cannot directly compare to the Strix requirements as max power draw is only part of the story. Transient response times play a bigger role then ever with Ampere.

NO, I am dead serious about it.

I know what my actual real power draws are, I can monitor them in real time from my PSU.

AND....

With the EVGA 3080 FTW3 ULTRA XOC 450W VBIOS they ARE recommending a min of a 850W PSU.

That comes directly from the head of the project development dept.

From what I can see, the EVGA cards have power monitoring LED's that work in the same was as the 2080ti Strix in that they very basically tell you if you have power. Also what? They have the same power delivery? Just no...they don't.

I can tell you that they in fact do have the same power delivery as the Strix.. ;)

Hey, quick update:

Strix 3080 draws:
1. ~450W with PL set to max
2. ~370W stock
3. ~320W 1900MHz@0.875V

Seasonic Focus Gold 650 (mid 2018) do not trip under any of the above circumstances with Ryzen 3700x, but it's loud under load. In the end I did find good deal on the HX850, so I've ordered it instead of RM850i. Should be plenty of Watts, even after upgrading CPU to Zen3.
