As of right now I have a full system put together with the exception of a CPU (which I'm waiting on November 5th for) and a Graphics card which I haven't been able to get.

Specs:

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900x (when it releases)

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken Z73 360mm

Motherboard: Asus ROG Crosshair VIII

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo 3200mhz CL14 (14,14,14,34)

Storage: 2 x 2TB Sabrent Rocket 4.0 M.2 NVME

Case: Phanteks P500a digital

PSU: Asus ROG Thor 850w

Graphics Card: Possibly 3080 Super?

I'm looking to run this system with a 4k 120-144hz monitor (dual monitors but the other is 2k 144hz)

Like almost everyone else I wasn't able to get a 3080, I thought about a 3090 but couldn't justify the $800 price difference with only a 10% performance boost.

As of right now I'm not entirely sure what I should do in terms of the graphics card. I feel like 10gb of VRAM is a little low given that even my current 1080ti has 11.

I've heard rumors that a 20gb version is coming out but no ETA on it. There's also Big Navi but my monitor is G-Sync and wouldn't have that functionality with an AMD card.

It'd seem I'm not getting a new graphics card before December at this rate regardless, anyone have any suggestions?

Unless all of the games you play exceed 10 GB of VRAM usage, I wouldn't worry about the missing 1 GB of memory. And we don't really know how good availability of the new CPUs is going to be at launch, so there's a good chance you'll have another component that is hard to get for a while.

I would say best strategy is to simply wait until stuff is available, unless you're absolutely desperate for a new system right now. In that case you'll have to go with whatever is available.

Please stop being such an idiot. Unless Nvidia actually announces a card stop using your rather strong imagination to make up some random graphics cards.

The new AMD cards come out end of October. Wait for that instead of praying to God for a 3080 Ti/Super/Unicorn.

It looks like the AMD card is going to be more powerful than a 3080 and also will have more VRAM.

It's not that 10GB isn't enough so much as that it's cutting it close. Certain games currently use around 8GB at 4k max settings which is what I intend to run at, so it's not unreasonable to assume that future titles within the next 2 years or so could reach or exceed 10. I can sub in my 1080ti for the time being but I'd really like to use real time ray tracing with HDR and hopefully sometime before next year.

I guess my biggest concern would be if I manage to find a 3080 in stock and buy it and then like 3 days later they announce a 3080 super.

I wouldn't exactly call it "imaginary" or "random" given that Gigabyte accidently leaked that they have a 3080 20gb / 3070 16gb on the back burner. If I had to guess I'd say they're waiting for AMD to announce their Radeon 6000's and then they release them as an answer to it. And I could go with an AMD big Navi card, but I'd lose G-Sync on my monitor as mentioned above so I'm a bit hesitant to do that.

This is pretty rare, and in reality almost no games are even there yet.  You will be fine with 10

More importantly, its unlikely you will be able to get a 3080 in the short term unless the bots calm down.  If they release this theoretical card at the end of the year, it might be months before you can get your hands on it.  Unless you wanted to wait until spring of 2021 to put the build together.  Lots of awesome games I would want to play that are releasing (Baldurs 3 + cyberpunk) and wouldn't want to wait for 10 additional Gb of VRAM that arent required.

El Zoido:  9900k + RTX 4090 / 32 gb 3600mHz RAM / z390 Aorus Master

The Box:  3900x + RTX 3080 /  32 gb 3000mHz RAM / B550 MSI mortar

At this point I'm thinking my best bet may be to just grab the first RTX capable card I can get my hands on and swap it out later if needed/desired. Can always sell it and recoup some of the money spent. Availability seems to be a massive issue right now.

Do you NEED ray tracing/dlss right now? Can't you wait a month or two and buy yourself a second hand 1060 6gb or something like that while you wait? It will be able play most games 1080p high settings 60fps and at least you can still game. You can find quite a few for around $100 used nowadays.

The more I learn, the more I realise I don't actually know anything.

Recommendations: Lian Li 205m (sleek, pretty decent airflow for a non-mesh front panel and cheap), i5-10400f (Ryzen 5 3600 performance, 20% cheaper), Arctic P14 PWM fans, Logitech g305.

where are you getting that the amd card is going to be faster? from what ive seen its probably going to be slightly slower but probably still will compete with the 3080
