PSU for 3080 a bit of conflicting info

If faced the same dilemma with my Asus 3080 TUF (non OC).

After some research, the total power draw was estimated at 550W, so I decided to roll the die and keep my RM650 gold PSU. After all I bought an overspecced unit to be fine with upgrades, so I went along with it. I do not overclock, nor I plan to. Had it been a lower quality or lower wattage PSU, I would have swapped it.

The risk with an underspecced PSU is instability because of noise on the power rails. You can mitigate by underclocking, but I wouldn't want to get to that point. Also consider that the PSU will see its life shortened the closer you run it to the rated power. 100W headroom is about the closest I would be comfortable with. A low quality PSU might die altogether and kill your system, which is why it is advised not to cheap out on the PSU. It happened to me on an older system with recycled parts. it was the Pentium 4 era.

The heaviest payload I run was 3D mark timespy (14400 points) and I played a good abount of games, so far no crashes. I can't overstate how good and smooth games look at 1440p 144Hz IPS panel with RTX3080 against my old 1080p 60Hz TN panel with GTX1070. Nvidia really came through this time with performance and price imo.

Long story short, If I had been doing a full build I would have definitely gotten a 850W gold+ unit to be safe for for future upgrades but I would be fine with a 650W gold+ PSU on a 3080 stock. Depending on your situation you might be able to overclock, but I would ask other for advice in that case. I would grab a better PSU if overclock was the plan.

You never want to be right at the limit I try to keep 20% overhead.

Base 3080 -550w * 1.2 = 660 W - Your fine with a 650W

Overclocked card 600W * 1.2 = 720W - I'd get a 750W minimum.

Always quality PSU no matter the wattage.  When my Seasonic died I dropped from 850W to 750W if I knew about Ampere I probably would have stuck to 850W but it is completely fine.  I'm actually tweaking power usage down on my FTW3 unless I'm benching.  I'm probably back inline with a base 3080 right now for power usage and performance.

Appreciate it, right now im looking at 750W i don't think i really want to go higher than that unless necessary. I don't plan on manually overclocking yet (CPU not GPU) but it is something i have thought about, although it would be a first time for me, and I already use D.O.C.P for my RAM and that's fine.

Would 750w be fine if i overclocked CPU (Not GPU)? I mean at least in this video they seem to be running ok

If you aren't OCing you will be fine with a 750W PSU.

Won't be OCin'g the GPU. CPU is a maybe thing down the line on my 3700x. A big maybe though. I like it how it is right now.
