CPU Overtemp on reboot, CPU is under 60 C

Hello all,

Ive had this problem in the past but it went away, and now it’s back. Whenever I reboot my computer I get a CPU over temperature error and have to go into BIOS. I managed to boot one time by losing optimized defaults, rebooting, and then going back to my previous settings. Turning off CPU temp monitoring still gave me an error.
I’m running an i7-6700k on a Maximus IX Extreme, with a reasonable 4.5GHz overclock. Every time I get the error, the BIOS reads under 60 C. I didn’t get the error this morning when starting my computer either, and I’m not getting any instability, my temps stay under 70 all the time except when I stream.
What could this be? I’m on the latest BIOS, but the latest is from 2018.

Hi! Welcome to LTT!

Well, a few things you can try that might help.

  • Re-seat the cpu in the socket.
  • Clear cmos.
  • re-flash the bios.
  • Change the temp threshold to a higher number (if setting is available).
  • Lower memory frequency (assuming it's overclocked by the way you worded the post).
  • Warranty the board (If possible and last resort obviously).
