Best 1660 Super?

Alright alright alright alright,

Just got a new workstation PC, and am looking to upgrade from on-board graphics to dedicated. I have a core i5 10400, and 12 gigs of ram. Just decided on the 1660 super, and am now looking for best after market config. I don’t use my system just for gaming, I frequently use Photoshop and I am a coder, so I lean more towards mixed workflow than simply gaming. Monitor is 1080p 75hz. Max 250 CAD. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

also, any suggestions on ssds? Just looking for 128gb to 256gb, nothing major. Looking to spend 100 to 150 CAD.

And you're not going to find a 1660 Super for 250 CAD. They start at 300.

anything amd is troublesome and not worth buying. stick with nvidia you wont regret the purchase. although i suggest to wait until the rtx3060 or 3050 comes out that would be in your price range and out do performance wise a 1660 super

Yeah, AMD isn't worth buying if you're a fanboy, the anxiety alone would kill you. Will it set my PC on fire? Cause my PSU to explode? Stab my grandmother in her sleep?

 

Concerns like this, just like blanket dismissals of AMD products, are unfounded.

not unfounded at all. i am for sure not a fanboy of any brand. i just dont like amd. its just unfortunate there is no other brand other than amd and nvidia in the gpu space currently (intel coming yay) amd is well known for driver issues and constant updates that leave you spending more time updating and troubleshooting your system than actually playing or using the system it was designed for. that is fact

No. That is an opinion. It is the opposite of fact. Your experience has a sample size of one. I've had two GTX 1060s which were plagued by driver issues and artefacting, you don't see me using that as a statistic.

test size of one lol how about the thousands of cards that reported to have issues and still no full fixes

Not to spark a flame, but in recent times nVidia launched certain unfortunate RTX 3080 for example.

AMD cards have been more power-hungry in last few years, but their price to performance is still good.

And you're not going to find a 1660 Super for 250 CAD. They start at 300.

You're not gonna find a new 5600XT even for 300 CAD, the bad ones start at 350 CAD

if i was a fanboy of nvidia that would mean im not excited to see intel come out with new gpu's. i wish there was more competition for nvidia and im glad amd is in the business of gpus and cpus it puts more competition out there for their competitors and thats a good thing. whats not good is Amd fanboys who follow team red without knowing all the facts

I was basing that off US prices, the 1660 Super starts around $230 for the crappy single-fan ones. The only dual-fan ones at $240 are the EVGA SC and the Gigabyte Gaming. 

 

On the other hand, the RX 5600xt MSI Mech OC and MSI Gaming Max are $260 and $270 respectively. Afaik those are pretty good cards.

 

But if they're that different in Canada, sucks I guess. At any rate, I agree - OP's gotta go used or even a 1660 Super isn't in his budget.

Even if you're going to be silly enough to use the number of google search results as a valid metric for comparison...

 

21,100,000 results for AMD

18,000,000 results for NVidia

 

Not exactly the overwhelming upset you tout this as, especially considering search results for 'AMD' will also encompass their CPUs.

 

If you search for 'Radeon gpu driver issues', you only get 8,420,000 results... So NVidia gpus have 2x as many driver issues as Radeon? But if an AMD fan brought this up, you'd flip.

 

And if you're talking about Navi-exclusive driver issues, that's a story from March 2020. Here's an interesting fun fact about drivers - they get updated.
