Downloading from mega.nz

Hi, is dowloading anything from mega.nz always legit, or can people downlaod stuff from it that is bad

Lots of legit uses for mega...lots of not legit uses for it. Like with most things in the cyber world, if you don't know what you're doing, you might not want to do it.

There are two questions in this. Are files uploaded to Mega always good? And is it legal to download files you don't for sure know where they originate from?

 

Answer to question 1 is no. Mega, and its founder, have been treated like pirates for good reasons. Mega used to have very open policy on what can be uploaded, same way as Piratebay and such. Now there are better worded ToS, but the site still doesn't take responsibility. If its requested, they have to comply on removing files and suspending accounts to avoid legal actions taken. But that doesn't mean they will actively check if files are good or not. Just basic scans for malware maybe.

 

Answer to question 2 depends on your countries copyright laws. In my country you can download anything thats available. The host/uploader/sharing party is responsible for any legal things of the stuff they share. The base for it is that if you aren't sure that stuff you get is illegally acquired or distributed, there's no case against you. If you go specifically looking for illegal copies, then there's case to be made. But proving such is close to impossible, so they target the uploader first. (There's slight disconnect in this logic when it comes to prostitution. There things are other way around).
