Help with finding the perfect quiet mechanical keyboard

Bestari

Hi i'm currently looking to replace my keyboard since it is to loud to use with others in the room. I have already researched quiet Keyboards a bit and have come to a point were I don't know how to decide. First of all here are some important things for me:

-Single Key RGB (pls dont judge me)

-Linear non tactile switches, since they are the quietest to my understanding

-I am willing to use QMX-Clips (I have O-rings on MX Browns right now and i am okay with the feeling)

-Good build quality, some form of Volume control, I want a Numpad.

Taking all of this into consideration I set out to find some Contenders to choose form. It's hard to find information on the loudness of a keyboard though. Additionally there are some Questions I am facing:

  1. Some people say that MX Reds with QMX-Clips are better than Silent reds. What is your stance on that?

  2. Maybe Cherry isn't even the best pick, are there other better switches/Keyboards to look out for?

  3. I have been looking at the Fnatic Streak RGB and Corsair K70-/STRAFE RGB. I really like the volume control wheel on them but would be able to live with other media controls.

Based on all of this Information what would you suggest I buy? (In terms of budget I would prefer not exceed the price of the MK70. Maybe a few bucks). Looking forward to the answers!

Welcome to the forum!

Linear switches are much more quiet in general however you can get quiet tactile switches, with a price premium of course. And unless you go fully custom they would be hard to find.

If you like the feel of something like a Cherry MX Brown the Blacks would be a safe call, they are heavy linears so the heavy feeling makes up for the lack of a tactile 'bump', where as MX Reds are very light with no weight to them comparatively.

Before I tried many other switch types MX Browns were my go to. MX Reds are not very nice to type on IMO. I have not tried any type of o-ring or clip though. Have you tired MX Reds?

I’m looking for a quiet mechanical keyboard as well. Like you, having per key  RGB is essential. Currently I have a membrane based Logitech K800.

So far I’ve had two keyboards I had hoped would fit the bill.

The first was a Steelseries Apex Pro. I really liked this keyboard apart from one thing. The metallic ping after pressing keys. I returned it.

I then bought a Corsair K95 Platinum XT with silver mx speed keys. This was a complete disappointment and although it cost the same is well below the Apex Pro in quality. The iCue assigned lighting effects are discarded at the Windows lock screen and the keyboard switches to the ‘hardware lighting’ effect. However that can only store a single predefined RGB effect, so my selected ‘Rain’ plus ‘Ripple when typing’ effect was swapped out to a single effect when the PC locks.

In addition the keyboard RGB effects locked up twice within a few hours and could only be fixed by unplugging / plugging it back in. There was a ping/ring effect on key press and release. I felt like I was trying to play a musical instrument.

I have had a GMMK recommended, and may pursue that. However I’m still looking at other options.

leopold make a keyboard with mx silent red and some dampening inside that makes it quite quiet.

A barebone like the gmmk (that's about the only one I know ... sorrry) with some kailh silent box pink or brown can be a nice option too ...

Or any keyboard with silent red like some ducky or durgod and probably many others.

For silent keyboard i can recommend any decent keyboard containing "cherry mx silent" They feature a small glass plate at the bottom of the switch that dampens the sound drasticly.

Here are two that i personally enjoyed:

1: LOGITECH G512 Special Edition Mechanical Gaming Keyboard
2: CORSAIR K70 RGB MK.2 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Silent Switches

Pretty sure that doesn’t have silent switches.

I love how people complain about people's personal opinions.

@Kevin.K.N. was very open about the fact that he was recommending based on his own personal preferences. Possibly his recommendations are poorly suited to OP; that's a discussion we can have another time, but to claim that his choices are just "bad" is at best disingenuous.

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.
