Are you using an Intel or AMD CPU?

On either, a great way to make sure the cooler comes off is turning on the system and running a CPU benchmark/stresstest, to make the thermal paste more viscous.

Well that's a terrible idea, I don't want thermal paste attacking me.

Like minibois said, put it back together, run it hot, then take it apart and give it some light twisting pressure. Should pop off pretty easily.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Did you use thermal adhesive on that thing?

Heat the heatsink with a hair dryer, but heat from the other side through the fan and then try wiggling it around and see if comes off. Don't use force.

If it is thermal adhesive paste, you need to be more creative, like using a thin saw blade for example.
