totjup5

I just noticed that this 290x card is only $599, That's only 50 dollars above the original launch price if my memory is correct, not a bad deal.

The  290 (non-x version) launched at 400, I think the 290x launched at $549

Non-X was $400. 290X was $550 MSRP.

These are low prices because everybody wants an aftermarket cooler. Stock is terrible, you might as well start a fire in your rig.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Ones with aftermarket coolers are only about 20 dollars more

The cheapest aftermarket cooler was $650, which is still $100 above MSRP.

Why did the prices go up in the first place?

Cryptocurrency coin mining caused retailers to sell cards for more because ppl were buying them to mine coins for $

In the U.S. the 290x launched for slightly below $600, then in the U.S. specifically it rose to around $900 at some vendors due to mining.

Why did the prices go up in the first place?

supply/demand

Lots of people wanted the 290/290x cards, so retailers decided they could make much more with significant mark-ups due to so many people trying to buy them at once, people would be prepared to pay ridiculous prices.

At least it made some nvidia cards a viable price/performance option for a while.

They have amazing driver support, but their premium price is a bit iffy.

Who would pay $600 for a reference 290x? You can buy a 780 Classified for cheaper.

If Nvidia ever lets someone else handle their streaming feature with Geforce Experience it might be nice, until then it just kind of sucks.
