$300 1080 is a good deal, right?

chi_chi_

My friend has a 1080 and he is planning on getting a 3070 and offered me his 1080 for 300 bucks. I'm pretty sure that this is a good deal but I just wanna double check with you guys because I'm not fully sure. I have a rx590 currently so a 1080 would be a pretty big difference, and my cpu is a R5 1600 (14 nm version). I'd probably get his sometimes around when the 3070 becomes available to buy.

when the 3070 becomes available those 1080s will drop in price a lot. The 2080 ti will be around $400 to $450 so figure a 1080 will be around $200

It's not great. It's somewhere between a 2060 and 2060 super in comparable performance. You can get a brand new 2060 for $300 and a brand new 2060 super for $400. It'd be a good deal brand new at $300, I think, but not used.

(is there a way to somehow @ everyone who replied or something like that, it took me a while lol)

What would you guys say is a good price for it? Like 200 or something like that and also, would my r5 1600 (14nm) cpu be a bottleneck at that point?

$300 is horrible for a 1080. RTX 2060 already offers similar rasterization performance plus RT plus DLSS for the same price but brand new. In techpowerup's testsuite in their newest gpu review (RX 5600 XT) you can see the RTX 2060 edge out the GTX 1080 at 1440p.

i would be very skeptical, did they say it was a local sale? sometimes people will lie about sales on hws for no reason and its real weird. the hws community is much more tech aware than your average consumer and i find it highly unlikely that someone bought a 1080 for 600 when there are probably a hundred posts with 2080tis at that price or lower.

that being said theyre still selling in the same range as 2060s and 5600xts so they must be worth something similar lol

$150 - $175 seems fair. The problem is that the 1080 is 4 years old. If he bought it anywhere near launch, that card has a lot of hours on it.

Then there’s the performance. Prices get really tight under $200 in the used market. People are still getting $100 for an rx580. Maybe they shouldn’t be anymore. Maybe the 580 drops to $75. People also don’t want to let go of a 1080 for $150. In there mind, it’s a 1080 and they feel it still carries weight. But the reality is, anything over $150~$175 makes no sense at all. At even $200, you would just add $89 and get a new 2060KO. Or for $200, you buy a GTX1660, give up a little performance, but at least it’s new. Even those cards new are less than ideal because 3000 series is on the horizon and they are all likely to be replaced by much better cards for the same money.

I hope your friend isn’t purposely taking you for a ride on the price. What is more likely is that he still thinks the 1080 carries weight and it’s still a desirable card.

Last year 300-250 usd was a good price. I wouldn’t do it now it even consider it.
Got my 1080ti for $400usd last year. That was a deal at the time. I’d pass even if it is from a friend.

For $300 you can easily find 2070/2070 Supers on ebay right now that would be a better "deal" (relative to what's available ~now~ not counting 3070 in a month).
