HDD with a clear cover

xentropa

Would be quite cool, and I can't really think of a reason they couldn't do this (especially for normal-people drives that aren't helium-sealed)

Someone could probably replace the top of a hard drive with acrylic in a clean room.

The looks would be easy ruined by scratches...

Such HDD would probably run a lil hotter and I think there have been such showcases... Linus took a look.

I guess a HDD case should be conductive for EMC reasons.

HDDs remember data using magnetism. So EM waves inside the computer case could ruin the data, right?

Doesnt it also act as an EMI shield?

Possibly, but metal magnets are usually much more resistant to radiation compared to charge based storage.

Just a random thought but wouldn't it be cool if HDDs had clear covers?  You could see the movement of the heads, disks and all.

I think there are hdds with clear covers..... even linus had used one such hdd in a vid...
