PC Gore Thread

Radium_Angel

As requested by @HairlessMonkeyBoy

I used to work for a small firm, doing the usual IT break/fix/consult/network.

I really enjoyed the work, save for a few occasions that went from amusing, to "OMG I'm not paid enough for this shit"

WARNING: All are true, some are not for the squeamish. You've been warned.

We had a very nice (and quite attractive) client who was a bit of an alcoholic. She called in one day saying she'd spilled a bit of wine on her laptop, and could I check it out to make sure it was ok. (You can see where this is going, can't you?)

I tell her sure, bring it on it.

She arrives, slightly tipsy, with the laptop sealed in a bag, just swimming in red wine....

Turns out, of course, it was't a bit, it was a whole freshly opened bottle.

So much for that laptop.

__

I had a client who was an alcoholic incontinent midget porn star.

You can fill in the blanks on what was in that system....

__

I once had to do a DSL install at a client's house. Waited for her to get off of work (I always arrived early) and she arrives, then lets me in saying the system is in the basement, and she'd be right back.

I found the stairs to the basement....

..her BDSM sex basement.

She comes down shortly thereafter, dressed for action, if you know what I mean....

__

I had a client, a professor, who'd damaged his laptop, with his pHD on the drive, and no backups. Desperate because the laptop had suffered an accident.

Sure, bring it in, let me see what I can do.

He brought in this melted slag of a system. He'd somehow managed to drop the laptop into a grease vat, and hadn't noticed for several hours

Scratch one drive....

__

Had a vet clinic, I'd just built them a very expensive PC, which fried only two days later.

They brought it too me, very angry at the poor build quality.

I looked at it and said "no system in the world will survive having a cat piss on the motherboard."

__

More as I can recall such horrors.

Feel free to add your own.

So one of the things I dreaded doing, as making my own network wiring. I wasn't very good at it, and the boos was too cheap to either buy it pre-made, or have a pro do it. So, we're doing this network install and we get up to the roof with the wiring. It's a sunny day, and hot as Hell.

My boss is looking at the wiring like he'd never seen it before.

He just stares and stares at it while I struggle with my own wiring.

Finally, he gives up and approaches me, holding up multiple wire ends and says "What colour are these?"

Turns out, he's colourblind....

I'd been working with him for years by this point and never knew.

But it did explain why our wiring always sucked...

Not when I'd built it...but they'd removed the side panel so the cat "had someplace warm to sit"

I'm not kidding.

Have you ever thought of the reasons, why you're in these situations? I mean... I'm just asking... Maybe someone dialed the wrong number... lol

But tbh, these stories are pretty crazy...

I once had a client who was a serious chain smoker and feline enthusiast (had a lot of cats). She brought us her PC because it wouldn't power on. She said "there's a red light on the back of it now".

Well we opened up the side panel and...there was tar everywhere with cat hair stuck to that. There was a physical coating of tar and hair that was SOLID blocking just about every fan and heatsink. The PSU had fried and some how, the rest of the system was fine. Took about the entire day to clean out. We had to take it all apart and vacuum all the hair (which filled a brand new canister on our 3M anti static vac). Then we had to wipe everything we could with isopropyl (we went through almost two whole bottles of the stuff). MAN OH MAN that was gross...oh and the smell. It was HORRIFIC. It stank up the whole workshop for a few weeks. It gave us all headaches and literally made some sick to their stomachs.

That was a pretty commonplace thing at my shop, sadly. About once a week I got a chainsmoker's system in, with dead mice, roaches, other bugs, christ only knows what else, and simple compressed air won't touch it, gotta go in with a scrub brush.

It got to be so bad, I started charging extra for systems like that.

My friend from my Engineering course (yes, an engineering student) came to me with a broken laptop that doesn't work.

I asked what happened and he said "I'm tired of it being so hot all the time, so I put it into the freezer."

He had to get his whole motherboard changed.

___________

Someone on this forum back in 2016 put in PC in his car and drove.

His PCIE slot was ripped out, that was the first time I saw individual PCIE pins without the plastic around it.

___________

Someone on this forum I helped a few weeks ago mistakenly used thermal epoxy as thermal paste.

He pulled his AM4 CPU out along with the cooler, and "the cooler was in the way of the lever, so I just jammed it back in."

His board was still alive.
