Hey guys, I was wondering if someone could give me a brief explanation on this topic. Also could you recommend parts to use. Do the parts matter? Also please recommend a case and what type of oil to use. For example could I just throw my current PC in oil and it would be fine or no? Also what are the benefits? Thanks! (Please excuse the grammar.)

Uhm...no. Why would you throw your parts in oil? You don't throw it in water when it's water cooled.

You use mineral oil.

It looks cool.

Use non-mechanical parts.

It's a hassle to change out parts once it is being cooled with mineral oil.

Please do a search - there have been chats about this already. First off, you really cannot use any standard case, as they are not air tight - hence why you see most in fish tanks in such. It is for show only. Pretty much all the parts in the oil are destroyed. Your can clean some of the oil off, but the parts are permanently stained by it, most cables are destroyed, etc.

Also, oil alone does not cool the system, you also need a pump and rad, fittings... all of which are pretty much destroyed as well...

Thank you for that last section about rads and what not, that completely turned me away from this.

but that's the whole point of having a oil cooled PC, that it is so unique that you cant re use the parts it's your own masterpece that you make... i just had to say that.

if you want to make it make and make yourself proud but do it so evry time you look at it you go "whoa i realy made this on my own"

How does the cooling perform? Presumably its similar to a custom water cooling setup because its using ambient temperatures. Might even perform a little worse in places depending on where the pipes begin and end and the eddies in the flow that will form between the outlet and inlet. Interesting concept but the more normal walked path of extreme from Air -> Water -> Phase Change -> Liquid Nitrogen is probably more appropriate.

technically you do just throw them in the oil, get a fish tank and customize a bracket to attach the pc to and then fill the fish tank with mineral oil and boom done :P

I just saw the link to the case. Very, very cool. Not worth the money imo, and I spend a lot of money on some very trivial things, but definitely a neat idea.

its the sort of thing you would have as a display if you owned a tech/computer shop. if i ever open my own shop i am definitely doing that as a feature! as well as custom looped computers and sleeved cables :P

It'd make for the perfect HTPC.

I'd never use it for a gaming rig or anything though.

All cooling that involves air in some way uses ambient temperatures.

I've thought of the idea of making a slim vertical book style one using an old laptop motherboard (i7 2630QM, 8Gb DDR3, GTX 460M) just never quite got the courage. The laptop as it is has broke: Monitor, SATA 2 port, Battery, Keyboard, and cracked chassis.

I just wasn't sure it would be cooled enough, if I went for a smaller build sans radiator.

OIL Cooled PCs are cool and it works, your comment isn't funny or anything.

I do recommend OIL cooling if you have free time for it and if you're going to put a server in it.

Keep it mine you need to use gallons to fill the tank which may substantially increase the weight of the whole system. Also as in the video of Linus showcase, if the case has a crack, it's going to be a HELL of a time to clean all of that off the floor and carpet.
