How much to spend on a motherboard?

I want to run a Ryzen 9 5900x (or 4900x, we don't know yet)

It has to be an ASUS board because i want to easily connect my existing unsupported desk light setup which just happens to exactly fit the AURA headers.

Expect the CPU to draw a lot of power. It's a workstation and imma hit it with blender renders / simulations / video encoding, maybe even sometimes a bit of multiboxing gaming (like 16 WoW clients) ;)

I would really not want to spend more than $180, but i would if anything below would bottleneck the cpu. I am also thinking of switching my air cooler for a 360mm AIO (because it looks seksi af), so maybe i would even overclock it a bit. Temperature is really not a problem with my setup.

Oh yeah, i almost forgot. I need a lot of SATA lanes and at least two NVME headers. Native RAID support without a dedicated controller would also be nice.

Oh, and f*ck wifi. LAN all the way

Ryzen 5000 will be on AM5. Assuming the 3900X's Zen 3 successor will be called 4900X, at $180 you'd be looking at the Strix B550-F.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

Display: Gigabyte G34WQC

You'll want to look at a high end B550 board then. Watch this video:

There was a debate last week on the internet wether or not AMD would want to clear up their shitty naming scheme about havin Zen2 and Zen3 both labelled as Ryzen4000, so they would just call Zen3 Ryzen5000.

But i did not follow this topic much.

other than the mentioned B550-F the X570/B550 Tuf Plus may also be an option if you are looking for something cheaper.

Looks like a nice board. Only thing turning me a bit down is that i have to pay for the included wifi adapter that gets turned into a shelf-dweller really quick. Lan all the way

There's also a non-WIFI version of it, though I think they've had trouble keeping stock up or something, since I very rarely actually saw it being sold at its MSRP.

Yeah, in euroland it only costs $10 more. I mean, it is not really neccesary, but i'd gladly pay $10 more for an actively cooled chipset.

My setup does not have great airflow where the chipset sits

then the B550-F would likely be the best choice in your budget
