I bought a new graphics card today an rx580 8gb but I have a 450W psu and it recommends a 500W is it okay to use?

I mean, it would work, but if you have the money I'd replace it.

usually you want to buy a power supply that is double you usage, as can be found in pc part picker, if you are able to undervolt it i would recommend or to get a new psu, something like a 600 or 650 gold

If you have the connectors it will be just fine.  Unless you have some 200+watt CPU.  Then maybe it will be a stretch but Id hook it up no problem no questions asked.  Even with adapters for powering it.

Maximum power draw is only going to be 200-250W on that card. The 500W recommendation is because with the wattage of the CPU and other components, you'll probably be butting up to 400W, and not everyone has a fantastic PSU. Getting too close to the maximum rated wattage can potentially cause issues with power regulation, and 100W gives a good buffer. You'd probably be okay with your 450W PSU, but I'd be looking to upgrade that in general.

I really can't recommend using this unit with an RX 580 system.

 

The wattage is fine, the PSU's quality just is not that great.

Anything from the Tier B at 450W or more would work fine though:

(assuming you have a 'normal' CPU, like a Ryzen 3/5 or i3/i5)

Then you have nothing to worry about when it comes to wattage overall unless you are running like 100 hard drives as well.

You might be able to just get by on 450 watts, but it's going to be close. It really depends on what your other components are. Do a pcpartpicker list for your components and see how much wattage it says it needs. Even if you are able to get by on 450 watts, I'd recommend upgrading to something like a 550-650 watt PSU to give you room for future upgrades.

450 is enough for now. Just avoid overclocking anything for now. Keep everything on stock especially your GPU until you can get a 650 to 750 or an 850 one later.

No. Usually, you buy a good power supply that has at least 20% more headroom of the max power consumption to keep the efficiency curve to its max, usually achievable when the psu reaches the 80% load of its rated wattage. That's not considering future upgrades etc going bigger is a novelty, not a requirement

 

In a worst case scenario, with hard oc and unlocked pl a 580 won't consume more than 270w

If they recommend more for the GPU than what you have, then no, its not okay. It really doesn't need to be any more complicated than that. If they recommend something, they are doing it for a reason.

Depends on what other components you are using in your system and, most importantly, brand and quality of the PSU you have at the moment. Even a bad 1000w PSU is garbage compared to a good 400w unit
