Cable-less mic

Aereldor

Are there any mics that just plug into a USB port and don't have any cables? Something like a Samson Go Mic, but without a cable. I remember seeing one that was essentially just a USB stick that could be moved around. Any ideas?

Do you mean like a bluetooth microphone, a lavaliere microphone or the ModMic Wireless?

Na just a USB mic that doesn't have any cables.

Buying this for a senior musician who's really good but technologically illiterate and hates cables.

i think it's more of a USB drive, but with a microphone

so the microphone stays on the usb port

sounds like a bad idea, because the mic should be as near to the place that is intended to be recorded (mouth for example) as possible

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I am not aware of any other microphones that do it this way. Maybe this person would be okay with a microphone with a detachable cable, so they can just get a really short USB cable?

It looks like terrible quality mic, but you want something like this https://www.amazon.com/Blue-TIKI-Condenser-Microphone-Cardioid/dp/B0078SAIUY yes?

@The Flying Sloth Do you of some mic that works in the similar way but isn't such bad quality?

Edit: Found this one as well : https://www.amazon.com/CAD-Audio-Omnidirectional-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B004P1BQG2/ref=pd_sbs_267_20?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B004P1BQG2&pd_rd_r=94f0d74f-def8-44eb-b330-44544f143ddf&pd_rd_w=tUcAF&pd_rd_wg=Pg6me&pf_rd_p=b65ee94e-1282-43fc-a8b1-8bf931f6dfab&pf_rd_r=S93MVJQ43254C7M5FWRG&psc=1&refRID=S93MVJQ43254C7M5FWRG

Both imho are not up for the use case, but maybe there are something better that I didn't find.

Oh man these are good recommendations, thanks.

The person in question is a famous drummer who's gonna be teaching online for the first time and is really bad at technology. I want something that sounds clear enough for drums and for his voice (skype will adjust the volumes automatically).

It's either one of these, or recommending him a USB or 3.5mm headset. I think he currently uses the old school Apple Ear Pods.

Happy to help, but wait for @The Flying Sloth to respond, maybe there is something better. But for what you're describing one of those I mentioned might do.

I will tell you right off the bat that mics like that cannot effectively be used to teach drums. Why? Well it's pretty simple, drums are Hella loud and voice is hella quiet, even if you're not talking while playing the trims you will either be clipping while drumming or too quiet when talking. I have a friend who had to teach virtually with just a pencil condenser mic and a bunch of compression (virtually) that found it only just worked well enough.

Now, is there a better option as simple as that? No, there's not unless you want to get something like a Zoom H1n as your mic for recording the drums and something nearer to his mouth for talking.

The only other option I can think of is really complicated, XLR mic to preamp, them to hardware compressor on highest compression settings, them to an interface and then into their PC. It's far too complicated for your usecase.

In short, can you do it? Yeah, sure, that CAD mic isn't terrible BUT is it a good plan? No, not really.

This guy played with Miles Davis... He knows drums are fuck loud. I found a workaround of keeping a condenser mic right over my shoulder, so when I talk right into it, the volume is about the same as the drums maybe 3 feet away from it. Problem is that may already be too complicated for him, even if I sent him like an AT2020 and a stand.

Wondering if there's a super directional headset mic that may isolate the voice enough that the drums are about the same volume.

How does the CAD mic sound? Skype's got the built in automatic gain adjustment and compression, which may be good enough provided the CAD mic sounds good to begin with... Does it?

I know the Videomic ME sounds amazing, I guess I could also send him one of those...

sucks the guy doesnt just use electronic drums for this purpos. I understand all the downsides to them but for this use case they would be great but then again if he cant set up a usb mic then electronic drums would be a nightmare for him

Would you say it sucks that Glenn Gould didn't use a MIDI controller if he taught online?

I'm probably just gonna help him set up a mic the way I did.

Im not saying he sucks lol Im saying this situation would be easier if the just used electronic drums. but I understand why he doesn't though, I grew up with and around musicians as well as playing music myself most guys especially the older musicians in my life, I know fucking hate any instrument thats electronic with the exception of electric guitars. also a piano is much easier to manage than loud drums.

Frankly I don't agree with either of your points, for sure virtual drums don't have the same tactile feedback and flexibility as an acoustic kit but also they're much easier to teach remotely on because it's just a 1/4 inch out.

Now, completely separately, nobody is saying he's a bad player but "they played with X" is the go-to resume pump that every single artist uses, hell, I've played with a few big names and recorded for even bigger ones but it doesn't mean I'm any good. It just means I had an opportunity and took it BUT STILL NONE OF THAT IS CHANGED BY MY ABILITY TO USE ELECTRONIC DRUM KITS.

If we're throwing the whole cordless thing out the window just get a decent supercardioid condenser and hang it above the kit so he can talk into it then tell him to play the cymbals really quiet, it's the best option within the constraints you've given (and the mark of a good recording drummer is the ability to play quiet)
