I think Call of Duty Warzone is worth the download if you have the space (and data cap) for it, though not everyone likes battle royales and/or Call of Duty titles.

CS:GO is "free", but there are rampant cheating issues in non-Prime lobbies so that's not always fun to play against. I'm not a huge TF2 fan personally but it's worth looking at as well. Steam has a whole section of free-to-play games so you should give the section a browse.

Valorant and Warzone are good options. As questionable as Epic Games may be, their launcher has pretty good free games every Thursday (so far I have Just Cause 4, the entire Batman Arkham collection, GTA V, a couple Asassins Creeds, and a bunch more). Rocket League will also be free to play soon on Epic Games.

Epic Games gives out free titles constantly. If you're an Amazon Prime subscriber, you can also get free games from Twitch Prime. If you're willing to part with a little money, you can get Game Pass for PC. Right now at least they're offering $1 for your first month, then $4.99/mo for an undisclosed "promotional period". The regular price is only $10/mo, though, so it's still not a bad value for what you get. Finally, although it's a bit more on the expensive side, Uplay+ gives you access to virtually every Ubisoft Game, even new titles (AC Origins, Odyssey, even Valhalla when it launches, etc.) for $15/mo. It includes all the DLC as well, which for games like the Assassin's Creed titles can run you up to $120 all in at launch.

Anyways, plenty of ways to play games that aren't just free to play, for free or cheap. Then, just follow the sales. Steam and Epic both offer fantastic sales from time to time where you can really fill out your library on the cheap.

Honestly, I don't recommend free games.  You can get a strong library without spending more than a few dollars though.  Classics regularly go on sale, or are available from reputable third party sellers like CDKeys.com and the sites on Isthereanydeal.com.  Some inexpensive games to check out:

  • Bioshock 1/Infinite
  • Borderlands 2
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Tomb Raider (2013)
  • Portal 1 or 2
  • Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
  • Mass Effect Trilogy

I don't know what computer you have, but if it's anything modern it should be able to run those games without sacrifices, looking and feeling much better than they ever did on consoles, and they can be found very cheap.

Edit: @Extebders This applies to you as well.

Get the microsoft pc game pass. $1 for your first month and there is a ton of games on there to play.
Install epic games launcher, they give away a bunch of stuff. I don’t know if ea access has a deal for your first month but download the origin launcher and check that out too.

Good thing with pc gaming is you can get a ton of good games for cheap, tons of great options for under $10

War Thunder is pretty alright, but it does get grindy fast.

If you're into DOS games, GOG Games has plenty for free.

The Witcher 1 is Free on GOG ATM, while the gameplay hasn't held up, it's really worth a playthrough.

If you're into games like diablo, 'path of exile' is a good free one. Although there is a bit of a learning curve.
