Considering jerryrigeverything can take a razor to all his phones without scratching them, do we really need screen protectors to stop our keys and our nails?

Is there any point of plastic screen protectors?

I maybe understand glass ones but considering gorilla glass 6 is out after a few more i feel maybe those wont be much usefull anymore either?

How many of you use screen protectors/have bad experiences with not using screen protectors?

There's always going to be a harder material than glass, and even at a particle size it can still scratch or buffer glass.

I have the S20+ and it comes with one pre installed, I had the S8 prior which had gorilla glass 5 and over the couple years of me having it ended up with some scratches but nothing major. I think if the new one didn't already have it installed I wouldn't bother putting one on.

A case on the other hand is a must in my opinion, so many smashed screens due to dropping the phone!

I used to have one but I took it off after it got completely cracked. After I took it off, I got a few light scratches. Noticeable if you look for it but nothing to disrupt daily usage. My new phone (iPhone 11) has never had one and does have some scratches (got them almost immediately) but they are small.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

It's not keys, but rather things like dust in your pocket.

So far all my phones had scratches in the display.

OnePlus One

OnePlus Two

Huawei P10
Galaxy S8

Pixel 3a

The Pixel 3a doesn't even have Gorilla Glas and also has the most scratches so far.

Scratches don't bother me tho, which is why I'll never use a screen protector.

Does apple use gorilla glass? My old apple products shattered very easily when dropped, unlike my phone with gorilla glass, that just takes a scratch

The plastic one is shit, no protection other than light scratches.

Go with the tempered glass one, i dropped my phones many times, broke the glass protector, but screen still intact.

Gorilla glass is good from frontal non puncturing damage.

Side drop or sharp rocks it will shatters.

I always use a tempered glass one. I've dropped phones a couple times, shattered the tg protector and the screen walks away fine. I did this with my new phone in March during a wind storm. Went outside at the store, wind took my hat, I caught the hat, cart blew away and in a moment of not thinking I let go of my phone to catch the cart.. My phone hit the ground hard enough that the stylus popped out. Not a scratch on the actual screen.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Plastic? completely useless in my Opinion. Idk how's that going to protect anything, if that stuff breaks/tears way easier than every gorilla glas screen.

I mean, it's like trying to protect your Car from beeing damaged by glueing Chicken Eggs around it.

My Oneplus 6T once fell down from my Bed~ onto my slippers, and the pre-installed plastic screen protector was already damaged. I have no idea from what or how, but right in the middle, it did burst.

I peeled it off, and never installed another protector again. 2 Months ago, i sold it with a perfect Screen, no microscratches or anything.
Same with my S7 edge. Never used a protector, never had the tinyest microscratch. My GF managed to get some, i honestly have no idea how.

So in my Opinion: If you need a protector, use a glass one.

Some people like me, don't need any protector. Since i don't know how to get scratches on the screen (but i use a Case).

Other people don't do anything, and magically some tiny scratches appear.

Even further, in all my Smartphones since 2010, i never managed to get my screens scratched. Except my S3, which fell on stone stairs, that had a tiny little baby-scratch at a Corner, almost invisible. But that was because it fell down once.
That was the only Case ever for me.

So what’s the point of e.g putting tempered glass screen protector on something like gorilla glass 6? Because if the glass breaks unlikely the phone would have in the first place so it just cost you more. Are we reaching a point where in order for it to be viable to buy a screen protector we need to get much higher end impact resistant ones at least as strong as the phones screen, in now day cases stronger than gorilla glass 6?

I do not use tempered screen protectors but instead opt for something more along the lines of a film, not really plastic but it isn't hard glass either. Here's one manufacturer that I use: http://www.iqshield.com/. They are somewhat more difficult to put on but are more resistant overall in my opinion, which I know goes against what everyone else is saying in this thread.

To me, the film absorbs any impact and transfers it, in a diminished capacity, to the Gorilla Glass which is already rated to be shatter resistant. In this regard, the film doesn't shatter or break so you need not replace it, and the Gorilla Glass underneath it remains undamaged. Small scratches are filled and 'healed' over time, and there isn't a worry about a small crack suddenly 'spiderwebbing' into several, which can sometimes happen with tempered protectors. Ever notice how the tempered ones always come in packs of like three or more? It's because a small drop can shatter them and you gotta replace them more often.

This is not to say they are bad or anything, I've just found something better...at least in my opinion. I spent six dollars on my screen protector for my year old phone and it's been a champ the entire time, never had to replace it even after several drops and falls. Anecdotal to be sure, and again this isn't the shit on tempered ones, but until they fail me I'm gonna stick with film protectors.

Hope this helps answer your question!

If i'm correct, this H9 tempered Glas is more scratch resistant than Gorilla Glas 6 (and previous), but shatters more easily.

The thing is.. with Glas it's the same as with any other material.
You can make it almost unscratchable, but it will shatter from the smallest impact, or you can make it shatterproof, but it scratches easily.

It's not possible to have the best of both worlds.
What Corning tries to do, is finding a sweet spot, that makes the Glas resistant ENOUGH for both cases.
