Hey
I was wondering about windows 8.1 stability compared to windows 7.
I'm currently running some Minecraft servers 24/7.
I will only upgrade to windows 8.1 if system stability is not worse than 7 (such as crashes, errors, program malfunctions, etc...)

Thanks

if you're running it 24/7 just for minecraft you can get server hosting for like $3 a month. Its probably using more power than that.

But 8.1 is just a stable as 7, plus its generally quicker.

System stability goes with your hardware.

If your hardware is faulty, then the system won't be stable

Consumer grade components are around 95-97% reliable.

Server grade components are around 98-99% reliable. This is thanks to fact that manufactures implements better components quality, better circuit board design, which both contributes to higher cost, and more error correction systems, such as the usage of ECC memory. In addition, drivers are more deeply tested, which makes the overall cost of the product increase, AND the hardware in question is designed to work under high temperature, 24/7.

That is why server grade hardware are much more costly. If you want system stability, that is what you need.

Windows 8(.1) has some issues with discontinued products... such as my usb wifi receiver.

Since then I've cabled my house.

server hosting hardware equivalent to my computer would cost several hundred dollars a month...

plus i like hosting from my home

So then picking either, will be the same. And you'll have to expect some downtime here and there. Even if you pick Linux based OS up. If you want to put all the cards in your side. Pick the best hardware from trusted manufacture with high reliability, and high quality power supply, and get the OS that is officially supported.

I have big problems with windows 8/8.1

Win8: random 10 seconds of sound hang. (this is kernel thing, NOT drivers!)

WIn8.1 no sound bug but "user profile service failed to load" after a certain number of restarts.

Just switched back to win7... Tust me, it's more stable!

The thing is...I actually like win8.

Kernel?! No. Sounds works great for everyone. The problem is your drivers.

Be sure to install the latest Windows 8 drivers for your sound card.

As for "user profile service failed to load" error. That is a drive issue. Your SSD or HDD is faulty. OR and most likely, you used a registry cleaner, and broke your account.

Your account needs to be re-created.

Or you can go through the long path of reassigning and fixing in the registry your account SID (the actual account security identifier)

Don't use registry cleaners. They break stuff, things you'll notice once you'll upgrade your Windows, or appear later on. Cleaning the registry provide no benefits. That's the power of a database, which is what the registry is. Notice how this forum is not going slower by the number of threads and post being added daily. The speed is the same if there is 1 post or 5 million.

trust me, it was not the driver. my mouse was lagy when the bug was occuring.

as for the user profile thing: my brother's pc did that too once. I don't use reg cleaners, It works just fine before I start adding any hardware monitoring tools to autostart-it works for some time, then failes to load the task schedule, after that, the startup is lower and slower, language bar dissapears and then the user profile error occurs. Not SSD's fault. I'm pretty sure the problem (win 8.1 problem) is somehow related to the fact that my motherboard is efi compatible but doesn't have uefi interface.

the thing is: once you get past the startup process, you'll be fine.
