Does anyone else find watching 4k movies on a 4k TV a bit strange?

Dravinian

I mean, as an experience.

I bought a really nice Samsung TV recently, far better quality than my old TV, and I started watching some 4k movies and actually getting to watch stuff in 'proper' 4k for the first time. I have never previously owned a TV the last time I had a TV in a house I lived in was 20 years ago - as I simply used the computer and monitors to supplant the TV.

I find it very strange.

It isn't like watching a movie, it is...it is hard to explain properly without sounding like you have gone insane, but it is almost like you feel like you are not watching it, but are actually there while they are filming it, not physically obviously, but from a visual perspective - but definitely while they are filming it not while it is happening...if that makes any sense.

I really feel like I am taken out of the immersion of the movie - it is almost like you are watching in 3D, but it isn't 3D, but it seems to have depth.

Just wondered whether I have in fact gone insane, or whether other people experience this with 4k?

Back in the early days of HD content, there was a push to make -- I think it was 60 fps -- the standard rather than 24 fps.  Many movies still do this.  I'd be willing to bet that you're experiencing this, not necessarily HD.  It's definitely a weird experience.

RE: 4k, I was just on vacation at a place with a 4k tv.  I watched a few LTT videos, switching between 4k and 1080p.  Couldn't even tell the difference.  I'm sure if you get a big enough tv you'll be able to tell, but even then I doubt it would be a strange sensation.  The FPS change is mind warping, though.

I could also be HDR if the TV supports it. HDR gives you a strange sense of depth

I have to wonder if this is the "soap opera effect" some TVs offer. In short, they offer processing to increase the perceived framerate. Some people like it, some really hate it. I don't think I've seen any monitor offer this, it is a TV feature. If it if this, it shouldn't matter the source resolution, and there should be some way to turn it off.

Like others mentioned -- it sounds like you aren't watching things at the frame rate they were shot in.

Thanks to all for bringing this to my attention, hard to test during the day as the room is a bit bright.  Will check it out this evening.
