Best X79 Board for I7 4820K

Go to solution Solved by dizmo,

I like the Asus, but if you've had a bad experience with them I can understand why you'd be a little off put.

I wouldn't get the EVGA just because they're not known for making boards. I'm sure it would perform fine, though.

The ROG board has wifi built in, comes with the OC panel.

They both have 3 year warranties.

The MSI has more PCI slots.

Apparently the EVGA has huge bios issues. Or had, at least. No idea if they've fixed them yet but based on that alone I'd avoid that board.

I think you'd be happy with either the ROG or MSI. The ROG has a few feature adds that may or may not be useful to you, and might be easier to overclock.

Hey guys, can anyone tell me the best X79 motherboard for the i7 4820K? If possible, I would like to stay away from ASUS, as I have had numerous problems with their boards for previous AMD builds, and they are the most problematic with intel as well (from reviews I have read). Price is not a concern, and I will be using system as follows:

-SLI 780 Ti

-64GB G Skill Ripjaws

-I7 4820k

-Antec Twelve Hundred V3 Black Steel Full Tower ATX Case

If I was to go with ASUS, I would pick this. However, the amount of complaints their previous versions of this board and my own experience with ASUS is deterring me heavily.

I'd go with the Gigabyte UD5 Gigabyte board. It uses their server chipset so you have SAS connectors if that's advantageous to you.

There's also the MSI Big Bang board, it's an extra $50 and has quite a few nice features as well.

There aren't really a ton of x79 boards out there.

If cost isn't an issue why not sell or upgrade your 4820k to a 4930k while you are at it?

The 4820k is cheaper than a 4770k. Only the motherboard is more expensive.

The 4930k adds a whole lot more to the cost.

When the difference between premium boards in the x79 platform is roughly the same cost difference between the 4930k and the 4820k.

Also the OP wants to match his friend instead of beating his friend =|

Hmm? That doesn't make much sense.

He's looking at ~$350 boards, which are only $100 more than a decent z87 board.

The 4820k is $300+ cheaper than a 4930k.

Yes, the ram is the only necessary thing to match him on, and why not utilize a board's full potential. And while cost is not a primary concern, I don't feel like paying a whole lot more for a processor that's not a whole lot better for my uses.

The boards he is looking at are on the x79 platform, which start at $238 and go up to $524 according to PC partpicker. A 4820k is $355 and a 4930k is $617, which is nearly the same range of price difference in motherboards. But it is a moot point now.

Just because you have 64 gb install doesnt me you will be fully utilizing it, unless its just for the show factor of having all your dimm slots occupied which is pretty swag.

I think I will go with the ROG board. I am hopefully going to order this build at the end of the month, and will see how it goes. In the event anything goes wrong, I will go running towards the MSI boards, as I know they make quality ones. Thanks for the help everyone.

A lot of the lower end boards only support 32gb of RAM, which isn't much of a help.

RAMDisk. That'll be able to utilize all of the RAM.
