CPU problem

Hi everyone!

 

So I've had my new PC for about a month now, which has a Ryzen 7 3700X and a Gigabyte Geforce RTX 2070 Super Windforce 3X. At first I was using it at base speed (3.6GHz) but then I decided to put it into some work so I put it into 4.0 GHz. It was working fine and after a week or so, I put it to 4.4GHz. Again, working fine, for about a week. I started experiencing freezes or rather framedrops about every two seconds. At first I thought it was the GPU. I ran a Heaven Benchmark. Got a score of about 2100 and the whole thing was pulling out frame drops left and right and I got a minimum fps of 8.1. Then I decided to turn down the CPU clock speed. I ran the benchmark again and there was zero framedrops. I'm wondering if I can give amazon this CPU (it should still have warranty, I got all the parts about a month ago) or I have to live with the base clock speed.

If you didn't monitor temp who knows. What voltage did you use ? What motherboard and CPU cooler do you have ?

How did you verify that the RAM is running at 3600Mhz? Try using CPU-Z.

 

Again, what voltage is the CPU running at?

I went into the bios and turned it to 3600MHz. As for the voltage, how do I check it?

That's without xmp. 

Use hwinfo64 to check ram frequency.

With zen 2 I wouldn't trust anything but hwinfo64 for voltage reading.

So you ran an unstable overclock and want to return the CPU because of user error?

Use hwinfo64 to check voltages. 

The ram frequency is 1800MHz, the cpu voltage is 1.256V, in the bios the temp of the cpu is about 46 but that's probably idle so where can I check when it is under load?

What do you mean? I was told that this cpu could handle 3600MHz.

I mean your 4.4GHz setting - just leave the CPU on all auto, enable PBO and don't mess with it :)

your voltages are, for the lack of a better word, not good at all - like I said, let it do its thing. AMD's subsystems are far more efficient at controlling Zen than end users. Hence why PBO usually beats most overclocks.

I just thought that 4.4 GHz was just the maximum capacity at which the cpu could run on it's own and that overclocking it was when you took it over 4.4. I came to the conclusion that the cpu should always be able to run nicely of speeds upto 4.4 and if it wasn't able to it was an error in the cpu itself.

Alright, I went into the bios and put the clock speed on auto but what about the RAM? How can I put it to 3600MHz

Of course, the ram should be at 3600 with as low timings as you can get stably. This is by far the most performance impactful thing, cas latency. I'd you can get stable speeds at lower timings, you can get better overall performance.

4.4 is single core boost. Just like intel CPUs don't run at 5.3GHz boost on all cores, AMD CPUs don't run at the max rated boost on all cores. That's why I said leave it on auto, the CPU will automatically determine where more clock speed is needed and ramp that core to 4.4 whole the others stay at 4-4.3

He hasn't degraded anything for a few days. Degradation occurs over the course of weeks or months even. No need to panick him even more

1,51 .... AUCH...

recommend max voltage is 1.3 as i recall. I dont think anybody will take back that CPU after you put the voltage that high

 

ahh saw you didnt run it for to long so CPU is fine,, but yes as others say these CPU are best in auto. wouldnt spend time overclocking those
