Build Log: Project Repurpose : Media Server

Commander_Z

The only thing I dislike about FreeNAS is if you decide to go with ZFS, you really should be going for server grade parts and then you need to spend the extra money building the pools. For example if you go for Raid Z2, you'll need 2 drives for parity and I think 2 data disks. If you can afford more that's great, but less is not possible. ZFS thus pushes you to spend more money but then again it was really meant for enterprise anyway. If you don't care about data protection/redundancy then FreeNAS UFS would be good.

As for installing things, it's gotten easier but it's still not there yet. You have to mess around with shares and different jails. It's a pain to install 3rd party apps but it's worth it when you get Plex working like a champ.

I think FreeNAS UFS would suit me better, im not looking to spend $1000+ on this, plus i already have the media on another drive as a backup

thanks for the tips

Just measured the fan mounts and it is 80mm

do you have other fans mounted in the case, or maybe post a pic or two of what yours looks like??

also when downloading plex, the linux version has options if you are running Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS

i'll be running FreeNAS, so just pick the Ubuntu one?

I have have some tower cases to put I just used these as servers because I have a ton of them and they have better airflow. The one with the open top has a 40gb boot drive and a 400gb blue drive. I don't need any more on my network right now so if I need to upgrade later I will. I just had these sitting around so I used them. Also I made a video a while back I've made some changes since then but still. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAtIs_RDyRs

Are you gonna mod the old case? Either way, looks like a great build. :D

yeah, the side panel has ventilation holes that would fit a 120mm fan, but there arent any mounting holes, so i'll figure out a way to mount that.

the front of the case, barely, and i mean barley has space for 3x 120mm fans, again, no mounting holes for them, or i could mount 2x 140mm if i can find a way to mount them.

finally, there's an 80mm fan mount on the back, so i'll use that.

i'll post some pics in my next post, to show you what i mean.

who know, i may cut a hole in the top of the case to mount a AIO :D, we'll see

You could get a bunch of tiny fans and mount them in the odd ventilation holes. :P

Update: so today i spent a fair bit of time trimming the inside of the front panel in order for there to be clearance for the 120mm fans

here's some pictures of what i did to the front panel

letting that set overnight, then i'll have to figure out where/how to mount the power switch

photos anyway

Your doing a great job! But I have a question. What do you need all this air flow for? Hard drives won't require that much cooling. I fan in the front and back should be plenty

It's really for the hell of it.

the case never had any fans in it, in its former life so i thought why not :D

this is all an experiment to see what i can do, and what i could fit in the case and it still looking reasonable(?) :)

Lol. I would probably do the same thing . What would be really interesting is if you tried to see how many radiators you could fit inside of it. Lol
