244hz 1080p or 165hz 1440p

ZZennaH

I’m about to buy a new monitor and don’t have the money to go for both 244hz and 1440p (if there is one under 500€. Which one is preferred? I play some first person shooters and also other games. My computer can handle 244hz btw. Thanks for answers!

I would recommend 165hz 1440p as most people don't really notice that big of a difference between 144hz (or 165hz in your case) and 244hz. Unless you are playing competitive games and you are very high ranked then you probably don't need it and the resolution bump would just make the games look a little nicer.

You'll very likely notice a larger difference by going from 1080p to 1440p than by going from 165Hz to 240Hz.

My pick would be 1440p 165Hz, unless you only play CS:GO and other Esport titles.

I would advise to go for the 1440p one at 165hz. Also I don't think many people can actually notice the difference between 165hz and 240hz but 1440p does look better than 1080p even on my native 1080p monitor I play GTA V at 1440p (via Nvidia DSR) and it looks much better.

System Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 @3.40ghz (6C/12T)
  • Motherboard: Asus Prime B450M-K
  • RAM: Corsair LPX 2*8GB DDR4 @3200mhz CL16
  • GPU: Zotac Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 (TU-104 variant) 6GB GDDR6
  • Case: Antec GX202
  • Storage
  • SSD: WD 240GB,
    HDD: Toshiba 1 TB @7200rpm
  • PSU: Corsair CX550 (2017 grey unit)
  • Display(s): BenQ 22 inches monitor, 1080p @ 60hz
  • Cooling: 3 Antec case fans 120 mm (2 blue LED front intake and 1 non LED rear exhaust)
  • Sound: Behringer UMC22 USB Audio interface, AudioTechnica ATH M20x studio headphones
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.

Definitely go for a 1440p. What graphics card are you running?

The difference is definitely there.

If you were playing at 240Hz solid for a week &

then switch to 120/144/165 - you would easily notice the difference.

Idk why people think the limit is 144/165 for discernible difference, the more Hz, the smoother & more responsive it is.

Although 1440p is a must, I will most likely try the 360Hz when it’s out in a few months.

The dream is a MicroLED / OLED 480Hz panel. That truly would be something special.

Anyway, OP - if you’re going 1080p then the best you can get is the ASUS 280Hz.

If it’s 1440p, then, depending on budget, the ASUS PG279QZ.

There’s alternatives out there, but those have to be some of the best within budget constraints.

What size of monitor are you looking for, guessing 27"

Go for 1440p 165hz, the difference between 165 and 240hz is not very apparent, but going form FHD to 1440p will make things in the distance and enemies a little more clear which will give you a more competitive advvantage.

I also lack post processing when I post so please refresh before replying as I probably edited my response!

You will have trouble pushing 144Hz 1440p with a 2060 Super. I have a RX 5700 XT with a 165 Hz 1080p monitor and I almost never get above 120 FPS with AAA games at high/very high settings. Of course if you are just playing CSGO, then you’ll be fine.

CPU i7 14700K | CPU Cooler Noctua NH-U12A | Motherboard MSI Pro Z690-A | GPU Zotac Airo RTX 4080 | RAM 32 GB GSkill Ripjaws V 4400
Mhz |
 Monitor Alienware AW2721D / Gigabyte M28U | PSU ASUS ROG Strix 850G

It's worth thinking about getting a monitor with g-sync then, that'll make a difference!

I don't think is going from 240hz to 165hz monitor and based on the two choices he has 1440p 165hz seems to be the better option for him even in competitive eSports until and unless he decides to participate in those eSports tournaments where every frame matter.

And people restrict to 144/165hz because of the their budgets not everyone has the budget to afford those high refresh monitors and not to mention the high end CPUs and GPUs you need to achieve those frames.

I've got an Asus TUF VG27BQ running on an 2080RTX, but did a bit more digging to see if it's still a good monitor these days. It's still mentioned at the top of this list https://www.hotrate.com/electronics/best-1440p-gaming-monitors/

There's only one other monitor I'd consider right now and that's the AORUS FI27Q - has a 165hz refresh rate, 1ms response and support for AMD FreeSync and G-Sync... good in case you change your mind, no bezel looks good too.

Only thing it doesn't compete with is the 0.4 response time of the Asus VG27BQ.

I never said he had to go high end.

The two options are well within his budget.

It’s more when people downplay 240Hz as something you’re not going to notice or just for eSports players. This isn’t the case. Anyone can make use of / enjoy higher Hz.

Budget constraints are one thing & fair enough.

But it’s completely different to say “you won’t notice the difference”.
