At the very least get a surge protector but unless your building gets hit directly chances are pretty low (near 0 imo)

Thunder wont damage anything. Lightning does.

If it is a major storm and the chance of lighting is high just unplug your system until the storm moves on. I do it all the time.

Hmm il see if the storm gets closer. I will get a surge protector for sure. My power supply is nzxt e650

Surge protectors work but if you receive a direct strike that surge protector wont protect anything.

Quick question. How big is the chance of a thunder killing my computer during the thunderstorm. I live on the 13th floor in the 16th floor apartment building. (i dont know if it is plugged in the surge protector).

0 chance. If the sound of thunder was enough to damage your computer, I would be concerned whether your ears survived or not.

It's the lightning you need to worry about. Best protection would be getting a decent surge protector and ensuring your apartment building doesn't have shoddy wiring.

Nitpicking today, are we? Both are related, talking about same event during the storm.

Anyways, if building has proper insulation and per-building protection for oversurge, nothing immediate will happen. There might still be power losses in the area.

It is always prudent practice to have a UPS with built in surge protection.  Single family dwellings are likely at more risk if there is not a proper ground (we had this fixed when we remodeled our kitchen 13 years ago. Current building codes in the US require this to be addressed in all construction.
