Plex on NETGEAR Nighthawk (R7800) - AC2600

If i were to connect a 3.5 4tb HDD to one of the USB ports would Plex work? And if so, will it be smooth or at least usable. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Um, so technically I bet you that someone somewhere has compiled a version of Plex that runs on Linux based routers running custom firmware, however, the CPUs in routers are usually not designed to encode video, so I highly recommend not using a router for more than setting up a very simple file share / BitTorrent service.

Desktop: KiRaShi-Intel-2022 (i5-12600K, RTX2060) Mobile: OnePlus 5T | REDACTED - 50GB US + CAN Data for $34/month
Laptop: Dell XPS 15 9560 (the real 15" MacBook Pro that Apple didn't make) Tablet: iPad Mini 5 | Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 10.1
Camera: Canon M6 Mark II | Canon Rebel T1i (500D) | Canon SX280 | Panasonic TS20D Music: Spotify Premium (CIRCA '08)

Building a PC to act as a server, using an ultra small form factor PC as a server, or buying something premade like a Synology NAS box. I chose to do the 3rd option because I'm lazy, even though I could full well build a server or utilize existing hardware.

I'm running a Nightwawk R8000 and the USB ports SUCK. I tried connecting a desktop and powered USB 3.0 HDD to the USB 3.0 port on the router and the max transfer speed I was able to get over my network was around 30MBps. The EXACT same drive connected to my Synology does 100MBps.

Also don't ever install DD-WRT on to it either, due to a bug with Broadcoms WiFi driver installing DD-WRT onto any of the Nighthawk routers results in the 5G WiFi either running SUPER slow, having a really low signal strength and/or not working at all.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

A router is not suitable to do anything but route traffic. Especially not a consumer grade unit like the nighthawk. The CPU on most routers is usually too weak to even route a lot of clients properly, let alone serve as a media server.

Plex is best run from a computer, server or NAS that supports it and has sufficient CPU power or GPU transcoding support.
