Help! Popping Noise and Weird Smell.

ToeYums

I built my first ever PC a few days ago. Things have all been going well until just now. The PC shut off suddenly with a pop noise but the PSU was still supplying power (the motherboard RGB was still on and my peripheral's lights). I pressed the power button and the PC booted normally, but then I shut it off and turned off the PSU, causing another pop. I also smelled something strange so also turned off the surge protector. Am I safe to turn on my computer again? I have the PSU plugged into a regular strip surge protector and that is in a regular US home wall outlet. All I have plugged into the strip is the PC and monitor. Could I be overloading it? I have left it on continuously for like 30 hours but all I had open was cookie clicker (don't judge). I unplugged the PSU and the inside did not look burnt or anything and the smell was gone. Should I be worried? Should I just plug directly into the wall? Also, sorry for any mistakes in etiquette, I have just joined the forums.

That sounds like you burned something, but you'll have to investigate further. If you smell burning, you'll have a good idea what is burning by unplugging things and whatever smells the most like burning is probably it.

Thermals can melt the plastic insulation off poorly-ventilated electronics. You should avoid having towers sitting on carpet for example.

I have it on a wooden desk. The front two intake are facing open air and the one back fan has a decent area behind it.

I don't want to open it up but I looked into the holes and through the bottom fan and all looked normal but it's definitely the source of a smell, though it doesn't smell distinctly like burnt plastic and I'm not sure if it smelled like that before. Could it just have been asked for too much power and shut itself off to avoid damage?

It sounds like the PSU is failing, or has already failed.

I'd request an RMA with EVGA (if still under warranty) and get a replacement unit, or buy a new PSU.

Not recommended to continue to use the PC with this PSU.

The EVGA BQ line-up wasn't the best quality anyways; might a be a good time to upgrade the PSU.

(Sell the replacement BQ or whatever EVGA sends back)

EDIT:

EVGA BQ (v1) has a 5-year warranty, so should be still covered.
