IPC yes but some games prefer cores and in those cases the 1600AF might take the win... :I

Cores don't tell the whole story 

If we are talking about lets say AVX

You might think oh the more cores option is better 

Wrong, the 3300x and the 3100 has a better fpu 

Way better for complex instructions like AVX to the point that the 2 extra cores becomes irrelevant

Edit and games don't really leverage the extra cores

Definitely the 3300X, as others have said.  It’s basically an upgraded, newer version of the 1600AF.  Provided you can find one in stock somewhere near you (which seems to be a lot easier outside of the US at the moment for whatever reason) and it’s priced at/close to the true MSRP cost, absolutely go with that option.  

 

FWIW, just the other day I noticed that the 3100X was in stock at a local Best Buy here in my area, and they had just run out of their stock of the 3300X.  Still have only seen the 1600AF in stock really online, sparingly (it sells out super fast whenever it’s restocked) but was surprised to see it listed on a local retail store’s site yesterday, I don’t remember if it was Micro Center or Fry’s though.  Pretty sure that when I was on their site yesterday I remember seeing my Micro Center also had a very small number (<5) of the 3300X’s in stock, which was rather odd as they were just about cleared out of nearly every other CPU with very few exceptions.  Like normally MC will have at least 30 or so various CPU models from Intel and AMD, ranging from your bottom of the barrel cheap-o low spec base model stuff like a dual core Intel Platinum G450 all the way up to the latest generation flagship CPUs for desktops.  

 

All the stock they had was totally scattershot, with maybe 1 in stock here, 2 or 3 there, at most I think they had 5 or 6 of the AMD Threadripper 3950 and they had 10 of the 3990X 64 core insane chips.  I’m actually a bit mad I missed out on their insane deal they were offering for a Threadripper 1950X 16 core at only $195.
