cheap psu for gtx 960

LinnusSebastian

Hi, I have a dell optiplex 790 with i5 2400 and I am looking to upgrade the psu so i can install the gtx 960.   I also have sdd and hdd drives plugged into power brick; 250watt

I am looking for the $10 - $30 range of PSU.   I found b-stock evga N1 400w psu for $20 but I checked amazon and many reviewers said that it destroyed their computer.

What is the safest PSU for under $30?  Is 400w enough or do I need more?

Thanks

an evga is the best you will likely find for that price. quality safe psu's cost alot more than that. you might have some luck finding a used one on ebay, or locally, that has decent specs. also, 400w is close, but it may be enough.

this is all i can tell you, i personally will not recommend anything for that price as there is no such thing as a good psu for 30$ or less. it's not like buying a cheap ram or something, psu's can do some damage when they are bad.. tl:dr, you are on your own, no offense.

Up your budget. There is no safe gaming-friendly PSU for $30, and a $10 PSU is already on fire.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

That's the 4th gen and on with Optiplex.  As an owner of both a minitower and SFF 790, they both have 24 pin power supply connectors, and the minitower fits a standard ATX PSU.  I have an EVGA 450 BR in my 790 with no adapters at all.  Perhaps you shouldn't use absolutes when you don't know what you're talking about.

Look for RaidMax or Apevia power supplies that are in your price range around 450w.

Yes, it's cheap just like you asked for and will power your video card.

Is it "good"? Well.,... let's call it good enough for the price.

Hd 7970, hd 7950.

Either of those can usually be had for cheap and are decent.

Then spend a little extra on the PSU to get something decent, like a Xilence Performance A+, or cx450, or s12iii, or system power U9

An RX 470 or 480 is very good value for the money.  They will exceed a 960 in most cases.

It's not a bad card at all, but at 1080p you won't get above medium quality if you want 60 fps.  Unless it's something really light like League of Legends or CSGO.

Is this psu compatable with optiplex desktop? I can get one for 15 doller

Delta make great PSU's but that one doesn't have any PCIe power, and you will need up to 2x of them to power a 960.  And never rely on those sketchy SATA power to PCIe adapters either.  You need a PSU with dedicated PCIe power.

I think the best thing is to save for another month and buy a better PSU.  Nothing is cheap right now.
